My daughter is wanting me to make a zippered pouch 10" wide, 6" high and 6" wide. I've drawn pictures and used scrap fabric and I just can't figure out what size to cut the fabric. I tried a 19" square but when I make the box corners I end up with maybe 6" X 4". Tried a 19" X 22" piece and have the same problem. Is there some kind of formula to use?

I don't know of a formula, but the initial rectangle has to be big enough to allow for the 6" dimensions. Maybe use some scrap fabric or paper to experiment with sizes of rectangles to have enough fabric for the 6 inch width, and then add on enough paper/scrap fabric to achieve the height, then you can take it apart to get the right overall rectangle size.Does that make sense? The 10" width is the easy part!
I sort of assumed you are using the technique where you make a triangle at the corners to achieve the box end.

Melanie Ham has a great tutorial for a zippered box pouch. I've made a few of them and there a good size.

It might be easier to buy a pattern.

Watch for the sales at JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby.

I'm thinking a rectangle about 17 x 25 might work.

Logic for that guess: 10 + 3.5 + 3.5 for the width. (10 inches plus 3.5 on each end for boxing)
6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 1 for the circumference plus the allowance for the zipper.

This is a great tutorial and pattern! I recently made these from it for my daughter who needed knitting project bags. I added pockets to the inside and also used pre washed flannel as a stabilizer quilted to the outside fabric before assembly, to give the bags a bit of body. It's what I had on hand. Worked well. The pattern includes 3 sizes and the measurements.

The noodle head pouches are great but not exactly the size your daughter wants. The largest has a finished size of 8.5″ H x 8″ W x 4.5″ D not quite the requested size. I am very curious as to why she has such specific dimensions? Is there something specific she wants to store in it? Or is it just an arbitrary size she has "determined" that she wants? My daughter doesn't sew at all but she will sometimes say something like.....I want a table runner to be 10" wide and 42" long. When I ask her why, she doesn't really know, just that is what she "thought" table runners should be! We go from there to determine the best size for which table she plans to use it on.
Makes life much easier.
