Default Need a class

I am going to make a memorial quilt for my sil who recently lost his father. He wants to hang the quilt on a wall in their new home. Now I feel a bit nervous. I am an ok quilter but the quilt I am going to make has lots of points. Flying Home by Pam Bono. I would like to take an advanced class for a little brush up. Most I have seen have you working on some simpler skills ( not that I couldn't use that) but not right now. Thanks for reading this request.

That quilt has been on my bucket list for a long time. Not sure of an online class to recommend, but I am a big fan of the Bloc Loc flying geese rulers. They are pricey, but worth it, especially when you have so many geese to make. I'm sure your SIL will love anything you do.

You might want to look at the classes that are at Craftsy. They do have a precision piecing classes.

Could you do the flying geese in paper piecing since that always gives nice sharp points? I think you might even be able to buy marked flying geese paper on a strip. Also as someone just asked earlier today, there is the Angler 2 that helps with making geese. You can check it out on youtube if you are so inclined. I too love that quilt! Good luck with it.

I second the paper piecing suggestion. It will actually go surprisingly quickly and the results will please you. It will also be much easier to line up the columns/rows of geese.

I don't think you need a class for a pattern by Pam Bono. Her instructions are very detailed. But you do need to be very organized with all the little fabric pieces you will cut. She usually tells you to organize the pieces in labeled small zip lock baggies. Go for it. Read the entire pattern over first and it'll make more sense.

I wanted to see the pattern, so looked it up on Google Images. Found a blog post about a beginner who made the quilt. http://hiddentreasurecrafts.com/flying-home-quilt/ The animal geese are foundation paper pieced. You might want to try foundation paper piecing or take a class on that before you commit. Some of us love paper piecing and some of us don't.

It's a beautiful quilt!

Yes, I agree, her designs are intricate, but precise and her instructions are spot on. I live that quilt, but don't think I personally will ever do it....the flying geese blocks are easy, it's those geese that would be my challenge!

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I hope to begin cutting next week. Finding the fabrics has been a challenge.
