I love that block but ...........
Since the directions do say rectangles only I wouldn't use it unless you could figure out how to turn that center section into a true rectangle.
I think that idea of a rectangle log cabin block is good.

A square is a rectangle. Ask Euclid.;-)

But it's not difficult to change it to a rectangle if you wanted to.
