The cabinet should be worth at least $100. but

Let me take that back, now that I've actually SWALLOWED some of my morning coffee ...

eBay's attraction is that you get something for less than you expected, hopefully a LOT less than expected, so I'd guess that prices would be on the low side.

I'd find the closest licensed distributor for that manufacturer, and make a day trip out of it - I'd stop by for an assessment by sewing machine shop (maybe they'd even be willing to buy it on the spot for resale) and stop by any quilt shops between home and the machine shop to see what's selling these days and to check out the quilt. shop samples

Actually, I find ebay pricing to be rather high. Sewing machines fetch more on ebay than they do locally.

I just picked up a 5000 for $300. with all of the hoops and scanning. Its in perfect shape and embroideries like A DREAM. I would say maybe $500.00

This site will tell you what's supposed to come with it. BE CAREFUL! Sometimes auctioneers don't know what they're doing a separate the accessories from the machine.

If you have a Janome dealer near you, call them and check what pricing would be considered normal and also ask if how much they would charge for a cleaning/maintenance check.

Oh, I think the age would be around 2000, 01 or 02 when they came out but I could be wrong. It's a computerized machine so it can't be terribly old. You might see if you could plug it in and make sure it works.

I think eBay is often high. Many listing don't meet reserve and are relisted, competing bidders drive the price up when they get caught up in "winning", with constant nudges from eBay, of course. eBay or paypal get a cut, and some folks are just "living in a dream world" about what they can get. So look at actual sales prices, not asking prices, and see what's included. Check with dealers and CL listings, too, as the wise ones already advised. Just an example, the Pfaff Select 3.0 is currently on promo for $599 on the Pfaff site. There's an eBay listing for about $740!, no test drive, no warranty, no education, no service...livin' in a dream world! Posting here and on patternreview.com to see what others have paid or would be willing to pay is smart of you. Someone just did that about the (old) Bernina 830 on patternreview and got a bunch of answers.

I am a Janome fan, all my machines are Janome's. I would err on the side of caution. This is a machine that uses embroidery cards and they are hard and expensive to come by. I talked to my repair guy and he says that parts are very hard to come by for that machine as it is older. You can by the hardware and software to put your images on cards but that is also expensive. I have a friend who bought the 8000 3 years ago and still can't find 3 parts she needs to use it for embroidery. Janomes have great stitches and are known workhorses. It might be better to take your money and put it towards a newer/used machine.

you cant edit or scale the embroideries without the additional part.

is the machine new? does it have any cards? can you get more cards? does it accept free downloads off the web?

the 5700 is still being made. if you have any questions, call a dealer and tell him that you would need a service man if you buy it, but want to know if parts will be a problem.
