I used to use old store bought blankets before I started buying batting by the roll. Now I just always have a roll on hand. I used to use the $5 blankets(the ones that had prints on them and would fade horribly after you washed it...lol....I made them pretty). Be creative and use what you have. Thrift shops are great for finding blankets....or maybe even asking friends or family if they have any that they don't want anymore. Nobody will ever know what's on the inside of it. :)

I used an old fleece throw for one. It's great. Very warm.

I've used the cheap blankets from the dollar store. They are "itchy" according to my boys. So I decided to turn them into quilts. They are very warm and heavy. Bought some on sale one year after Christmas for $5 each. (That was some time ago!)

A nearby Walmart had the 50x60 throws in a 2-pack on clearance for $3.00 which makes it $1.50 each.

My plan is to use them as combo backing and batting.

I've gotten one throw partially quilted using fleece in that manner and it is coming out really nice.
