I'm working on an Irish Chain quilt for my best friend that has a background of cream and navy blue calico. I'm using it because it's something that she loves, but it's not really anything I would use for myself. Her tastes are much more country/primitive, while I lean toward more traditional (paisleys, French florals) or contemporary prints.

I have quite a few in my stash, but rarely use them. Sometimes someone is looking for one to repair an older quilt. Since everything that is old is new again..............I wonder if they will ever come back into style )

I think there will be a resurgence of calico...maybe more vibrant, but the smaller scale design....we will see.....

I needed a printed fabric for a young boy, however I wanted him to still like it when he grew up. I went to Hobby Lobby and found a vibrant calico with colorful planets all over. It is beautiful and sophisticated. I thought calico was a type of cloth. They told me it was for quilts. It is quality and bright and what I would consider modern. I like it, and it was very reasonably priced.

I thought is was design of print onto cotton fabric, not the fabric itself.....learning something new again today. What does that make my calico cat.....just a wildly marked cat or not a cat?...

i like to use calico prints. When a pattern calls for a number of variations of the same color, eight reds for example. I like to include a number of calicos. The prints change the overall color to create a subtle variation that is pleasing. IMHO.

According to some things I looked up:

one of the definitions for calico is that it is a type of fabric -

I use some calicoes, mostly in scrap quilts. I, too, am of the "if the color works, use it" school of quilting.
