Default Opinions about baby quilt

I want to make a baby quilt for a granddaughter expected this summer. I am looking for some opinions on an idea I have and I figure this is about the only place I will get some honest feedback.

I don't want to make the quilt out of baby prints as I'm hoping it will be something she will always be able to use. I have some scrappy squares I'm considering using. I am just concerned the colors may be too dark. I don't have enough of these squares made yet so I thought the remaining ones I make would be more colorful and lighter in color. Also, I am thinking I will make the small two corner pieces on each square from the same fabric so when they meet, it will make a better design. For the back, I thought I'd use a light pastel color and I haven't thought about the binding yet.

I'm leaning more toward the 2nd picture with the points coming together to make a tiny square in the center which is why I was thinking of making the points all the same fabric.

Any thoughts on this idea would be appreciated. Do you think it is too dark? How would you place the squares? I would love to hear any other thoughts or ideas on this. Thank you very much!!

I like the second layout better, also. I think bright colors are fine for a baby. While I usually use baby prints, I do make scrappy baby quilts. They are as well received as the baby themed ones

I like on point better but it seems that your fabrics are very similar in value - medium. If you could add some lights/brights and some dark, that would add some interest. If you want to check value, make a black and white copy of the block and you can easily tell how it reads.

I like the second layout better, too. I think it has much more eye appeal!

I really like the second layout much better....I too think it reads medium. (I tend to only buy mediums...I have to make myself buy lights. Sometimes I use yellow to add bright spots.)

Would you ever consider adding sashings and cornerstones? You could use black and white fabrics for the sashings. That is supposed to help stimulate baby's eyesight. You could use a variety of B&W prints and a variety of other fabrics for the cornerstones.

i like the second layout, too. i really wouldn't worry about the center sq being the same color unless you are trying to meet a particular color scheme. for instance, if it's a purple room, i'd try to make the centers purple and bind it in purple. as a child, i was aways fascinated searching for the colors and patterns in my aunt's quilts.

I like the second layout better. It has always reminded me of beveled tile and has movement.

I like the 2nd layout too. Good way to use up scraps.

I also like the 2nd layout better. If you want to make it more "childlike" you could applique her name or a silhouette of and animal in white fabric.

Right on point suggestions here.
