Know I'm late in posting but I use childrens drawing paper. If it's to big for my printer I use an old blade in my rotory cutter and a ruler and cut away the overage or I use my scrapbook paper cutter. I also make my stitches really small.

Somewhere I read and went out and bought Scribble and Rubbing pad at Staples A three pack was $6.00. Great, cheap and works just fine.

I use copy paper but I use an old tracing wheel to trace the lines before I sew the fabric on and it makes it easier to tear away....

There is a method of paper piecing that uses freezer paper, where you do not actually sew the fabric to the paper, but peel the paper back and then sew just next to the fold line. This has the advantage of not having to pick out the little pieces of paper at the end as well as being able to reuse the original sheet a few times.
