I lay pieces side by side and then whip stitch them together. However you finish you quilt off, the batting will be secured.

I've been told its a good idea to lay the ends to be sewn together with a slight overlap and cut a swerving "s" through both layers along the edge. Then butt the "swervy" edges together to zigzag stitch - less chance of a bump or separation where the 2 pieces are joined.
I have also used fusible interfacing to hold the 2 pieces together while I zigzag. Good Luck.
