Nor'easter,

And if she wants to make something similar, and not like that, then it is all right, correct?

I am so tired of people screaming, "theft" over quilt patterns, cross stitch patterns, etc. As somebody wrote, "Most patterns are over 100 years old--there isn't a lot of really 'new' patterns out there. People for centuries have taken a square and divided, re-divided, and divided again to get something they like.

As to the Indian, I didn't notice you jumping on somebody that suggested using a Pantograph of something similar. Please get a life. I am sick and tired of getting jumped on for trying to help somebody. Oops!!! that was you that suggested using somebody's sheet metal design!!!

The bethlehem star with the end of the trail was what gave me the inspiration to create something for my sister but because I am a beginner there is no way I know how to make or have the knowledge to create a star right now.

This is my opinion about copy rights. If the quilt is already made and you see a finished project ASK!!!!!! if you see a quilt and you want to make one like it ASK!!!!! If you see a quilt and it makes you want to create one totally different then it is your design. I believe that would be the correct way to handle the copy right problem.

I am pretty sure that this is what I understood from the copy right discussion. If I am wrong please let me know. I do not want any problems with anyone.

You're good Tami, if that is your plan..
The only problem that I see in this thread is the suggestion that you print the picture, enlarge and trace it and use it for your own template

This particular subject, the "end of trial", is very common and has been used by many, but you cant just trace someone elses version of it and use it for yourself.. just write the man and ask, Im sure you will either get permission to use it for free or for a small fee

And dont forget to give him credit for the drawing.

Your plan to use it as inspiration and do your own thing is fine

And the star is an old pattern, no problem there either...

That was entirely my fault, Judy. It's a metal piece that I posted and suggested tracing and I know that I should not have made the suggestion to enlarge it for her template. I do regret it on many levels.

No problem, Nor'easter, thanks for owning up to it..lol
And we have learned something today. Which is all good.

We have all become so accustomed to the ease at which we can do these things today, with the technology we have, that we tend to forget.

The site you posted is all work of an individual and what nice work he does. He states that it is all original work.

I haven't made up my mind if I am going to use this gentlemen's design or not but I do intend to email him for a few suggestions. For all I know because he does do metal and all I need is paper perhaps he might even be honored that I even considered the idea. I just wonder if he did it free handed or if he used a pattern? Like I said I do not want to hurt anyone in anyway. I also want to know if there are more that one pattern to the end of the trail. I have been looking and I have seen several statues and photos and they are all different in one way or another but so far I have only found those two patterns for quilts . My sister has been collecting this for many years and she has several all over her place the problem is she would miss one if I barrowed it and they are all pretty much too large to use as a pattern to trace. I am also wondering what style of material to use with it. On some of the pictures that my sis has there are some feathers, then there is some turquiosm whit and red on one of them and I just not sure how indian design to go. Any helpful suggestions there? I WILL GET CONSENT BEFORE USING EITHER OF THE PATTERNS! This is a project for 2009 so there is no hurry in making the decisions. I do appreciate all of you for helping me. As a beginner I do not want to start on a bad note especially if this will be considered my design. I a going to take my time and plan it so everyone is happy but most of all it will be made from love for one of my sisters. All your advice and help will be needed and appreciated. That is one of the reasons I joined this site. Thanks again to all. MissTami

Tami, his web site says that his designs are all his own original designs. And he has many, so I believe him.. I did try to email him and the email came back as undeliverable. So, perhaps you should call him..

At any rate, where ever you get your design, I think it would be fun to work with you through this design process. So, if you are so inclined, please feel free to contact me as you work through it. I think this is a very exciting projec you have embarqued upon and am anxious to see where you go with it. Any your sis will be soooo thrillled...

Miss Tami I found a free pattern called Indian Trails. Maybe this is something you'd be interested in.
