I square my quilts up as I add my boarders. I take a measurment in the middle of the quilt and use that number. then I 1/4 up the boarder and the quilt top and add my boarder to the quartered up quilt pin to pin. Hope you understand what I mean. If not let me know I will try and explain it better

when I was taking studio art classes and we had to learn to mat and frame our own work, we were taught to make the bottom mat boarder a bit larger than the other borders and were told the eye automatically makes the correction and it was a better way to set of the print (or whatever was being framed). Don't worry and learn from this. It seems it would only be a major problem if you wanted to enter the quilt into a show. No one else will ever ever know--at least no one who has been gifted a quilt by me has ever measured it to my knowledge.

Thank you very much for your replies. I will remember to square before I border the next time! I don't think I'll trim any from the border as I think I would be noticable. I always wash my quilts when they're done so I will probably just try to block it to size while it's wet.

How about splitting the difference and trimming off only 1/2"?
