15 reasons for not changing needle

Put a new needle in, phone rang. Answered, had long conversation with niece. Came back to machine, pulled thread to back, lowered presser foot, and chain sewed 15 sets of 4 1/2" squares. Used the thread cutter and started to pull the squares back to cut apart. You all know where this is going don't you.. well, duh. I never re-threaded the needle. Said a few choice words, went and had some chocolate, then came back and threaded the needle and sewed 15 sets of 4 1/2" squares together again.:D

Thanks for the chuckle this afternoon. I bet that could have been any one of us.

Deborahlees 07-26-2012 10:48 AM

I would have hit the hard liquor, at the very least a very large glass of wine.....;)

PenniF 07-26-2012 10:49 AM

It is such a RELIEF AND BLESSING to know that i'm not alone !!!!!!!!!:)

AFQSinc 07-26-2012 10:50 AM

I have definitely been there! You know what the worst part is? The 1/4" seam is always perfect.

SouthPStitches 07-26-2012 10:55 AM

That's quilting in a nutshell. Some days the best of intentions aren't enough. Murphy and his set of laws is following you every step of the way. I just walk away from it after a whole lotta choice words. Absolutely a glass of wine can help!

Tartan 07-26-2012 11:12 AM

...and it usually happens are carefully guiding some tricky bit under the needle before it moves. Then I lift the pressure foot to check the seam and.....Another favourite of mine is forgetting to change the foot and switching to a fancy stitch.

Deborahlees 07-26-2012 11:20 AM

Goodness graceious.....it is so nice to know I am not alone......be there--done that...usually when I am under the gun time wise.....which is why I refuse any more to deal with deadlines, had them all my life while working, refuse yes refuse to have them now when I am retired....start christmas now, finish by Halloween...then its down hill all the way.

GagaSmith 07-26-2012 11:22 AM

Look at the bright side--at least you had a good reason to eat chocolate! Hope it tasted good.

Neesie 07-26-2012 11:30 AM

Chocolate is a very important sewing necessity! I've stopped sewing, because of an empty bobbin (good time for a break) . . . then gone back and started sewing again. :p

Jingle 07-26-2012 01:08 PM

I have had that happen too. Empty bobbin also. I will think the bobbin is close to running out and check it often, of course I keep sewing and think it will last until I'm done. You guessed it, after sewing a long seam, as in a border. Go to cut the thread and yep, I ran out not long after I started. I just put in a new bobin and redo it. Getting angry is a waste of time, it would happen too often with all I the ways I can screw up.

Sandra in Minnesota 07-26-2012 01:34 PM

Yup, been there!

paulswalia 07-26-2012 01:53 PM

Been there, done that, without the interrupting phone call.....try explaining that to your husband who just heard a string of not very nice languange coming from the sewing room!

You are definitely not alone. I'll bet 9 out of 10 quilters have done this at one time or another. Maybe even 10 out of 10. I always feel so silly for not catching it before I have gotten too far along.

bearisgray 07-26-2012 05:49 PM

been there - done that -

Did that yesterday! Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks the bobbin will magically last until I've finished sewing. :)

Digitizingqueen 07-26-2012 06:14 PM

Wine would have been better lol wow hope you got the blocks together

nycquilter 07-27-2012 03:02 AM

been there, done that with all the above==and, knowing me, at least most will happen again. 8^P

MaryKatherine 07-27-2012 03:11 AM

Amen to that! You could add carrying the sissors to the phone, or one of the fabric pieces etc.

lonestardreams 07-27-2012 03:46 AM

What a cute story.

Caswews 07-27-2012 04:46 AM

Oh I am so glad someone else has that problem too !!LOL Chocolate cures all of those types of mishaps for sure !LOL

Latrinka 07-27-2012 05:18 AM

For me, it'd been a cold miller lite and chocolate! Goes great together! I have sewed a whole bunch, then discovered bobbin had ran out!

laura59 07-27-2012 05:59 AM

Been there, done that. Won't say how many times I've done it. Lol.

hisgrace 07-27-2012 06:08 AM

"Amen!" to all the above! I did the "I think the bobbin will last" with my very first quilt - of course it ran out halfway through sewing on the binding. Just took a deep breath, thought, "Well, I guess I need the practice!", filled the bobbin & did it again. :P

sewnbug 07-27-2012 06:24 AM

tooo funny. lol

Thank you Sandy -its been a long week at the machine here. I was changing bobbin thread color -well I pinned and sewed about a dozen blocks together only to find the new bobbin still on top of my machine. So I decided it was time for a break-so I put my shoes on to go to the bank and pay the electric bill.Well I forgot the bill come home to get it and found I had locked myself out of the house.Grrrrrrrrr. My son crawled thru a window. Then he tells me I should keep my windows locked.I'll be going out to pay the elec and on to Lowe's for a couple keys-one for the kids and the other for my 2nd set of car keys so I can lock the window and give the kid one less thing to razz me about.

rosiewell 07-27-2012 08:13 AM

I hear you, I have had a few of those duh myself!

Oh my! That's the kind of day that makes it worth crawling into bed with a good book, a candy bar, followed by a long nap and dinner out!!

Personally I think sewing machines should have a function built in that whenever you say a certain cuss word, out pops a chocolate.

Oh, you should have him install a keypad entry on your garage door! Just input the code and you're in like flynn!

pinkcastle 07-27-2012 09:21 AM

I knew there was a reason to keep chocolate in the house!

KwiltyKahy 07-27-2012 09:29 AM

Yes, yes,yes

LadyElisabeth 07-27-2012 10:17 AM

I've always believed chocolate was one of the necessities for all quilters.

PenniF 07-27-2012 11:27 AM

ok....all these admissions....i just have to know....anyone else ever sewed your finger into the seam:rolleyes:.....just the tiniest little bit of skin, right by the nail...don't even feel it til you go to move your hand and you're stitched to the quilt? no blood, no pain.... thankfully i haven't done it in a long time .... ok dang ! now i've jinxed myself !!!

If that had been me, I would have gone back to sewing without ever having put in a new bobbin. Sometimes I feel so brainless!

One of the advantages of getting old is that the kids all have kids of their own and can leave me alone.

If you were closer, I'd gladly share my chocolate AND wine, with you!

Like Button!!!

I don't cuss at my machine but I do yell at it, from time to time. "WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!?" It knows better, than to answer.

Don't think I've ever done that but it's a wonder.

Yesterday, I learned why one should not keep needles, in the same place as pins. . . . :p
