all white quilt
My niece requested an all white lap quilt for her wedding gift. Any ideas, I do not want to do a whole cloth as I did that for my daughter and it was a one and only as it was special just for her.

pick up a variety of white on whites (so you have different prints/textures) & make a quilt using those- i made one all star blocks (from Alex Anderson's book-Keep Quilting with Alex Anderson) i actually used all cream fabrics in different prints/textures- it really turned out quite wonderful.
i've seen bargello's made with all one color in a variety of texture/print too- you can really choose a collection of white fat quarters & use them to make any fat quarter friendly quilt- when it's done you will be amazed how it looks when laid out. |
Did your niece see your daughter's? It sounds like she may be asking for the same kind and just doesn't know it is called a wholecloth. You could consider a monochromatic quilt. Any quilt pattern can be done in a monochromatic color scheme. Pick whites, creams, light beiges, white on cream prints, white on white prints. Just make sure you have enough change in the value to distinguish between different fabrics. But before you go to this effort I would ensure your neice understands she won't get a wholecloth like your daughter's.

I guess you could cut white fabric into whatever size blocks you would want to use and sew together as with any blocks. Quilt it up and there it is.

Do you have an embroidery machine? You could embroider white flowers on white blocks, piece them for a top and then quilt. Or work out a trade with someone and have them do the embroidery work for you. It would be a beautiful white quilt and not a wholecloth.

Could she maybe be thinking of use it for the ceremony or perhaps a baby christening blanket later? It would be kind of fun to do QAYG white on white blocks with different Leah Day designs on each one and join them together.

My friend has just done a white quilt using the 10 minute pattern and putting lacy fabric in the false Chinese sections. For the very first time her 40 something son praised it and said it was the best she had ever made. Also an easy pattern

Colette Wolff wrote a book a while back about ways to texture fabrics. I don't know if it is still available, but it's worth looking.

When a friend's daughter got married, she (the daughter) also wanted a white quilt. My friend found many different white on white fat quarters and cut out blocks of the same size. She used a really light off white thread and different quilting in each of the blocks, including the date of the marriage and couple's first names. It was beautiful and everyone just loved it. She is not a professional quilter by any means but used Leah Day's site as ideas for each of the blocks.
