I have to agree. I would be very upset to find out that a quilt I donated to an animal shelter, nursing home, etc. went to an individual who works or volunteers there (not that volunteers do not work). We have a Goodwill store in our town that the former manager inspected all donations for her own use before things were priced and put on the floor for sale.

Carla, what a beautiful quilt. As someone who has made quilt donations, I have to agree that the shelter should benefit in some way from the contribution. I donated a quilt to a group that donates them to cancer victims/families and I was a little surprised to find it hanging in the local library for a raffle. The only reason I wasn't very upset was because the library is still a good cause to contribute to. But ... I have to admit that I had to think about it for a moment. Then, I bought tickets for the darn thing! LOL - Didn't win.

Ease up, people. You have no idea what compensation was given for the quilt......plus pups love their comfort but have NO aesthetic sensibilities.

Carla should keep the quilt! There is no sense in letting such a beautiful piece of art be "used up" by animals. They still are not people, and can't appreciate the beauty. Perhaps Carla has her own way of compensating the shelter for her find. She works there as a VOLUNTEER. Maybe she could make a simple quilt to be used at the shelter.

I think Carla should compensate the shelter for the quilt. I would want to keep it also, being a quilter and knowing what a find it is. Give a $50 donation and feel good about it. Or make a scrappy quilt to take its place or go to a store (even a second hand store) and buy a blanket and donate it in its place. Just do something. Otherwise, it's kind of like walking off with the merchandise.

Why don't you sell it, on ebay or craigslist or something and donate the money to the shelter

The OP did not directly state that she kept it for herself - for all we know, she took it home, washed it, photographed it for QB members, and brought it back to the shelter to be hung on a wall.

And if she did keep it, we don't know what she may have done to compensate for it.

This is kind of where I stand, too. Animals should be kept warm and comfortable but they don't care if it's a heirloom quilt or a new blanket. People do care. I applaud her for rescuing a beautiful quilt that someone worked many hours making. I think families often donate inherited things they don't personally want and because they don't know or appreciate the value of handmade items. But the items are treasures just the same.

I also do agree in burying a beloved animal in a quilt if that's the owner's decision. But that's an individual choice of a particular family.
