I've used my mat and ruler for this purpose before, but not my rotary cutter. It does look like you are using a utility knife like I did! :)

Are you using a utility knife? I would be afraid of chipping my ruler. I have used an old rotary cutting blade and my big ruler to cut wallpaper.
