Has anyone done this? I am trying it now for my block for our quilt club raffle quilt...any tips?

Honestly, it is not much different that applique, except you are using fussy cuts from ornate, larger scale, fabrics. Perhaps you can use some fusing to make it easier.

I just recently completed a kids quilt using the method but I cut out the fabric element abstract, did not follow the design element exactly. Here is picture. It is kind of hard to see but the funny shapes in the outer border between every cat paw block is the broderie perse.

I used that method for my IRR center. My advice is to use groups or clumps of flowers (or whatever) unless the design is fairly easy to cut out.

Gaigai - that is amazing! Did you cut some of the flowers individually and some in groups? I have had trouble with the little inlets (I can't think of the right word) between the flower petals (I'm using a chintz looking fabric with big roses) as tiny bits of the background color show and I can't seem to shove them in with my needle (I told my friends that it's "needle-shove applique").

Feline Fanatic - adorable! How many cats do you have? I had 3, but unfortunatelhy my Henry died a few weeks ago. I still have his sister, Diana (I got them around the time when Princess Diana died) and Winnie, a fluffy black shedding machine.

Thanks for advice. It's my own fault that I am doing the broderie perse: we were given the background fabric and basket fabric and pattern. We could fill the basket any way we liked. Last year I did fruit, and cut the shapes out of colored fabric but this year I wanted to try something different. I was too busy and uncreative to try to draw something so I thought broderie perse would be easier as the flowers are all designed already. Boy was I wrong - it isn't easier at all because of those inlets! Also I couldn't cut out the stems so I will have to embroider them on, so its turning into a much bigger project than I had in mind!

I'm hoping at least it'll help with my applique skills, our LQS is offering an amazing Baltimore basket class this fall and I want to be able to take it and not get too bogged down with sewing problems!

P.S. Feline Fanatic - do you belong to a quilt guild in the Capital District. I went to a wonderful quilt show in Ravena a year or two ago. We sometimes get quilts from the Albany area in our quilt show in Cooperstown.
