Probably a dumb question. I'm a novice at sewing/quilting. I went to wind a bobbin the other day and had a large spool of Aurifil and the thing flew off the spool holder as the bobbin was winding.

I just wondered what I'm doing wrong and if it is possible to use a large spool or cone with my 6500. Or do I need to invest in a thread holder?

You will need to use a thread holder. You can get them at Joann's and Walmart for about $7.00.

The 6600 has a built in holder - not sure about 6500, but if you need to buy a thread holder, buy a metal one. The plastic one I bought from JoAnns tips over easily. Metal one stays put.

I also saw in a tute that you can put your cone in a coffee mug as long as the sides of the cone don't hit the sides of the coffee mug.

Check the round containers you have around the house: coffee mug/cup; plastic drinking container; any container that will hold your cone. My personal favorite is a Pringle Can (cut it in half).
I put the cone in the container and set it behind the machine (right side and just touching the machine) Thread the machine just like you were threading from the spool) I've put several pennies in the bottom of the container for added weight. I've never had much luck with store bought holders

My son made me a thread holder out of a paper towel dispenser, total cost $1.06

I use a large cup to sit the cone in & then thread it as usual. No need to buy a metal holder & it works great on my Janome.

You may not need to buy or make anything. First put a large size spool - like a Dual Duty / 400 yd spool - on the spindle. Then place your cone on top of the spool; it will hold it nicely.

Janome usually comes with an upright post you insert in front of the regular spool place. It's small though, so ideas about making a thread holder are good.
