I have been looking at all of the wonderful picture of the carpenter star here. I really want to make a carpenter star quilt, they are all so beautiful.
My question, is there any way to make the star the size of a king size bed. I would like to have it fill the top of the bed and then have boarders drop on the sides of the bed. The standard mattresses is 78x80 or if I could just have the star big enought to be in the center of the bed and maybe put small stars or some kind of block on the corners to make up the size 78x 80. I,m not real good with figuring out the size of the HST to make this big star. anyone know how this could be done. Thanks |
I'm a little confused. Is this quilt for a king size or standard size bed? How big is your king bed if that's what you are wanting the quilt for.

It uses just 2 blocks, solids & half square triangles. Making it 8x9, using 10" blocks would give you a 80"x90" quilt. You can make it smaller or bigger, according to number & size of borders.
I have a pic saved if you'd care to see it,PM me. |

8 inch blocks would give you 64 inches square if you make it like these pics. then add a border. 8x8=64" 10 inch blocks would give you 80 inches square. you would make 64 blocks since they are done 8 across and 8 down for this design. |
To make a single block to fill the top of a 78 x 80" mattress, using the pattern in the tutorial for Carpenter's Star, each of the squares OF THE PATTERN should finish up 10" square. If the pattern part is a square, cut 10 1/2"; if the pattern part is two half-square triangles, they should be cut from a 11" square, pieced, and trimmed to 10 1/2". (This allows you to be a little wonky on your seam and not have to rip!)

Thanks all for figuring out what size HST I would need to make a king size quilt .
The top of a standard king size mattresses is 78x80 so the 8" sq would work as that would make a 64" block, them I can add some borders to make up the differents to make it the size of a king quilt with a drop. What are your thoughts on this do you think it will look ok or to big? Thanks again... :-D :D |
no, it wouldn't look too big. that's one star that looks great large. good luck.

Remember even tho your mattress is 78 x 80, you have pillows on the top, so take into account that space or your star will be partially covered by pillows. I usually set my pattern down from the top about 18 inches. It's a beautiful pattern...Good luck

you always want to be sure to ADD a half inch to your square's size for the seams. if you use an eight inch square, & expect to get 64 inches, it won't happen!!!
if you start with 8.5, ok. if you start with 8 inches, your FINISHED size will be 7.5! clear as mud? |
Be sure and post a picture so we can see! As you can see, it's one of my faves! :-D :-D
