Do you use 1.5" strips?

Usually, I see 2.5" strips, and jelly roll patterns for using those.

Just wondering if any of you have used 1.5" strips, and what you made from them.

nativetexan 09-02-2012 10:46 AM

well i use 1 inch strips of black inbetween blocks. but not 1.5 jelly rolls so far.

RedGarnet222 09-02-2012 10:52 AM

The 1.5 strips are good to make purses, wallets or other accessories with. Doll quilts or tiny pp projects.

Raggiemom 09-02-2012 10:55 AM

I used them once to make a purse but I don't really like to work with such narrow pieces.

Log cabin blocks

irishrose 09-02-2012 11:22 AM

My daughter does LC wallhangings - my Christmas tree is lovely. I am going to use 1 1/2" strips on the light side of my uneven LC, so a light precut pack would work. Other than just outlines and such, I haven't graduated to such narrow strips.

quiltsRfun 09-02-2012 11:36 AM

Other than a narrow sashing or border, the only 1.5 inch strips I use are scraps that I put into string quilts.

quiltyfeelings 09-02-2012 11:38 AM

The "Snake River Log Cabin" uses all 1.5 widths.

Candace 09-02-2012 11:45 AM

I've made several rail fence quilts using honeybuns.

ArtsyOne 09-02-2012 12:04 PM

I used them for log cabin blocks, sashings for some patterns, the front face of Attic Windows frames and string quilts, but when I'm stocking up my stash of strips I always cut the 2.5"

Jackie Spencer 09-02-2012 12:20 PM

Moda used to have Honeybuns (1 1/2 strips) but they don't make them anymore.

virtualbernie 09-02-2012 12:30 PM

I use them for sashing and log cabin blocks.

Fraew 09-02-2012 12:37 PM

I cut them up into 1.5" squares to trade like a lunatic! Haven't made anything with them yet...just collecting. :)

quiltyfeelings-
Where can I see the Snake River Log Cabin pattern?

wolph33 09-02-2012 01:40 PM

2.5 or 3 inch for me.

IndigoQuilter 09-02-2012 01:44 PM

I would use them for Log Cabin, Rail Fence, and as others said making smaller items like camera cases, wallets.

QM 09-02-2012 02:01 PM

Log cabin blocks and inner borders, but no, not in jelly roll form.

wesing 09-02-2012 05:53 PM

We are cutting all our scraps into 1.5" bits to use in Pineapple blocks. We have Gyleen Fitzgerald's "Trash to Treasure" book and ruler.

Log cabin blocks (I often use 1 and 1/4" strips!)
curved log cabins
inner borders
flanges
4-patches
snowballing squares (hope to have a picture of these in use coming your way in a day or two)
string-strip pieced blocks
triple rail blocks
sashings for mis-matched size blocks

String quilts.

thepolyparrot 09-03-2012 05:35 AM

I've got a foundation pieced pineapple in progress, and I've bought all the Kansas Troubles Honey buns and yardage necessary to make a king-sized log cabin quilt. I'm planning an Oh-My-Gosh with honey buns and one of my recent quilts has a bazillion 9-patches made of 1½" strips.

I love 1½" strips because they look so much more intricate than the 2½". :)

jcrow 09-03-2012 06:01 AM

String quilts, also.

Mariposa 09-03-2012 06:08 AM

I love 1.5" strips! Great for LC blocks, for doll & mini quilts, a PS quilt, and for squares to swap! :)

Mkotch 09-04-2012 03:20 AM

Log cabin blocks with 3 inch centers look very nice.

carolaug 09-04-2012 03:27 AM

I use 1 1/2 strips for hook rugs.

jeanneb52 09-04-2012 03:28 AM

I nver knew that rolls existed of 1.5 strips. Ya learn something every day here.

quiltmom04 09-04-2012 04:43 AM

Sometimes. But not nearly enough to actually BUY a group of 1 1/2" strips.

AlienQuilter 09-04-2012 04:56 AM

Never used them. 2 1/2" is small enough for me.

Honchey 09-04-2012 04:59 AM

What is an Oh-My-Gosh?

Normabeth 09-04-2012 05:33 AM

the honey buns are used for a log cabin quilt

kolacequeen 09-04-2012 06:10 AM

I bought a 1.5" jelly roll a number of years ago and couldn't figure out what to do with it. Finally made a string quilt on a foundation and I was very pleased with the results.

Lori S 09-04-2012 06:58 AM

I use more 1.5 strips than 2.5 strips. I like the way the colors of smaller strips blend together better than 2.5. I have even cut jelly roll strips to 1.25 to get the better blending. I use the smaller strips in just about everything. Log cabin is a favorite , but pineapple , and just about any strip method quilt can be modified /reduced scale to a 1.5 strip or smaller.
I am not sure how many I would purchase .. since so many of the narrow strip method quilts I make are scrappy. I would be "in" if it was all tone on tone white on white or natural blenders , since I like the scrappy look for the "fill" strips in a scrappy.
So many books and patterns are geared toward the 2.5 width... and also fat 1/4s , one exception being log cabins.

MimiBug123 09-04-2012 07:00 AM

The 1.5" rolls are honeybuns and they are precious. They are great for pineapples or log cabins.

My time 09-04-2012 07:09 AM

Makes a great size for an interesting log cabin block or courthouse steps. In my opinion smaller pieces make for a more interesting quilt.

Pete 09-04-2012 07:10 AM

I use 1.5 inch strips in folded log cabins. I make table runners, hot pads, or wall hangings out of them.

purplefiend 09-04-2012 07:40 AM

I use 1.5" strips for Log Cabin quilt blocks.

railroad 09-04-2012 07:46 AM

THey make beautiful 9 patches

maxo 09-04-2012 08:38 AM

Oh yes, especially now that Edyta Sitar has come out with her books. She uses 1" and 1 1/2" strips and her quilts are just beautiful!
