Double Wedding Ring Quilt

I have been quilting for 7 years now. I recently quilted a 40 year old double wedding ring quilt that my friend's mother made her. It is turning out so nicely that now I have the bug to make one.

Can any of you give me some tips. Is this a hard quilt to make? What is the best book, rulers, etc. to help me get started.

Thanks for sharing your expertise with me!

When my mother passed she left a double wedding ring cut out so a couple of years ago I decided to make the top. I made several blocks, enough for one row and then put it away and moved on to other projects. Last night I got it out and can't for the life of me figure out how to put the pieces together. I wish I had finished it when I was working on it before. I think there are many books on the market but couldn't tell you which one is the best. Maybe check Joanns and use a 40% off coupon if they have one. I hope you have better luck than I am having.

I am doing one with a paper piecing method that wwas in one of the magazines - I think McCalls. Haven't come to the part about putting all together yet. But I am piecing the outer curved parts as I finish other projests. Just add a piece or two of leftover fabric before putting it away. I figure that way I will someday be finished with all the outer pieces without getting sick of piecing them all at once. Soon I will cut some of the connecting pieces and assemble what I have finished. At this rate, a couple of years from now I will have a beautiful double wedding ring.

i hear that it is not difficult if you take the steps slowly and carefully. it still scares me. there are many newer patterns that are shortcuts, too.

John Flynn Double Wedding Ring method

I have made four DWR quilts using John Flynn's book and templates and found the directions easy to follow. He also demonstrated his method on a segment of Simply quilts. I don't know if you are able to retrieve segments of this show from HGTV,but it's worth a try. His website: www.flynnquilt.com.

Thanks to all of you who replied. I am going to check out John Flynn's book.

Have a great Thanksgiving!!!

I'm doing the McCall's pp pattern like sewmary, and it really isn't that difficult. Time consuming but not the end of the world.

Pick a pattern that fits your worldview! There are some super-simple patterns that just applique the rings, and there are fiddly little piece patterns that can take years to finish. The former would fit someone who wants the look of the quilt and the quilt itself. The latter is better for someone who loves the process and at the end, it's a lovely quilt but s/he's mostly itching for the next puzzle. I'm somewhere in between. :)

Im working on one now using the rings that bind book and template by cheryl phillips. Very easy

I took a class years ago based on the book: Rings That Bind. It was easy and quick and fun. Since the class was at a LQS several shoppers asked to see our work. All made the same comment: they would have taken the class had they known how pretty it could be ... because the quilt on the cover just didn't ring any bells with them.

There is a tute on a blog called The Plaid Scottie. Very helpful. The rings are paper pieced and the rest templates. It was a quilt along but I found it when it was all over.
