Favorite quilt photos (OR) how do you photograph your quilts?

I recently started a blog mainly just so I could journal about my crafty stuff and also so I can keep track of the things I've made as gifts. I'd like to take some nice photos to go along with it but dang, I can't find a single cute corner in my house that's suitable as a background for a quilt photo. I guess that's what comes from having four little kids.

I thought it would be fun to ask some fellow quilters to post or link to their favorite quilt photos, whether that's a photo that you took of your own quilt or one you saw somewhere online that you thought showed off a quilt really nicely. And some tips on how to take nice pictures of quilts would be great too!

I hang mine on the clothesline in the yard about 10am or 2-3pm with the sun coming from the side so it shows off the quilting. The sun is too direct and bright between 11-1 and flattens out the texture in the quilt. I get as close as possible to cut out all distractions behind the quilt.

I love to see quilts hanging on a clothes line. Here is one of my favs'. This is only one pic of several shots. close up, back, detail of quilting and the signature block. The angle of the light is real important to pick up the texture in the quilt. I use one of those portable hanging lights that mechanics use if there is not enough light on the day I want to snap pics'.

Beautiful photo and beautiful quilt! Maybe I'll go set up a line. :) I do have a retaining wall in front of my lawn that I thought would be OK to use in the summer, but I don't want to get my quilt dirty just so I can take a photo of it. Also doesn't help this time of year when it's wet outside ...

I did manage to get an OK shot of my latest quilt in my bathroom this morning. There's nice light in there because the windows are frosted. It still kind of looks like it was shot in a bathroom though, haha.

It doesn't look like a bathroom shot to me. I think your quilt looks fantastic. I know what you mean about finding the right spot to take nice photos. I moved into my mothers house last year about this time. And, I too am finding it hard to find just the right spot. Guess I haven't tried everywhere yet. :D

Thank you! :)

I've done about everything. I've draped them over a couch, spread them over a bed, hung them from clotheslines. If they are small enough, the design wall will display them. Lighting is the key. Natural light is always the best. I love baby quilts with the baby sitting on them!

I love your quilt and I think that's a great way to display it for a nice photo. The ones on the clotheslines are very pretty also & a good place for photos for those that have lines!
