Hello I'm new to the board and I'm not sure if I'm putting this
question out to the right location.
I have a Viking/Designer II and I'm have trouble with thread breakage when I machine quilting. I seem not to have any problem with straight stitch or fancy stitching.
I"m new to machine quilting and wanting badly to learn.
What is it that I'm doing wrong.

I have a Designer II as well. I had problems with this when I first got my machine. I was threading my spools incorrectly. Check your manual for the two different ways to thread the machine for the different ways thread is wound onto the spool. This may help. Your thread shouldn't get snagged up and break then. Thank You. I'm enjoying the board very much. So much to look at.

I find that my machine (a Janome) needs quite a bit of tension tweaking when free motion quilting. Experiment with a practice "sandwich" to see if that helps.

The other thing I have found is a topstitch needle definitely helps with FMQ- it has a larger eye and allows the thread to go through more easily.

It kind of makes sense that FMQ might give you troubles because you are controlling the speed by which the quilt moves. If you are moving it too fast - or a little herky-jerky, it can yank the thread. However, I would also suggest to check needle, threading, bobbin, and tension. Have you tried different thread? Some machines are picky.

I had taken Dawnmarie's suggestion about how my machine was threaded. (Hey Dawnmarie I learned something new about the threading of my machine "Thanks) Sad to say that it didn't help with thread breakage. I'm using a Schmetz quilting needles 90/14. I have changed thread, tension, bobbins and needles. I'm going to give it some more time. I don't want to give up yet.

Have you considered that you may have old thread or that the thread isn't high quality and your machine needs that for the job?

Yes I did think about that. I purchased new silky and coats & Clark. I just have to keep thinking postive and not give up.
If I can figure this out, I'm going to be one happy lady.
