Ok everyone, when you try to build your stash, do buy fat quarters, jelly rolls, charm packs, etc? Or, do you buy mostly yards. Am trying to build my stash but don't want to spend foolishly. I see the stashes on this board and my mouth drops.

All of the above.

i buy yards as much as i can or the rest of the bolt.

I get major stash envy but limited space makes me chose my fabric for specific projects and fat quarters for smaller instant projects.

I'm on a buying freeze hoping the quality of fabric gets better when the cotton shortage problem gets better. When I was buying it was usually 3 yds. for a main fabric, plus 1 yd. for coordinating fabrics. 1/4 yd. for my floral applique collection of pieces.

It really depends what your style is. I know that is vague.

But, if your into applique, FQ's would work. If your into small/baby quilts or lap quilts, then you might want only 1-2 yds. If your into bigger quilts 3+yds might be what to buy.

Then there is the like, love, & OMG must have feelings you get with certain fabrics. That sometimes helps me to decide how much to purchase.

And another thing to take into consideration, do you have room for stash? If space is limited then only purchase what you have room for. IMHO to purchase and hide the fabric in tubs (never to be seen again), then you forget what you have. :? :-(

I usually buy by the yard

Don't forget the "I'm really hungry and would prefer a sandwich so I'll buy 7 yards of this print with muffins instead" or the "oh isn't this cute, never seen chihuahuas in a tutu on fabric and just have to have it"

Then I have a "someday I MUST make this pattern and this fabric will work so well" pile.

All of these just miraculously grow my stash without even a plan.

Another way, when my friends find out I love fabric, they will bring me their grandmothers, mothers, aunts, whoevers leftovers. My niece brought me some to church a couple weeks back. She had been to a yard sale and saw it and thought of me. Oh, and I'm like the others on here...sometimes the fabric calls my name and says...take me home with you!

Have fun building your stash!

Ditto.

My fabric seems to multiply in the night. Scraps especially.

I usually buy yardage - 2 or 3 yards. However if I think I'll be using the fabric in a Boomerang swap I'll get 6-10 yards. :)
