I was wondering this morning just how much quilting everyone is able to do. How many hours a week or per day are you able to spend on your passion? I know there is never enough time in the day for me to do what i want but i manage to sew more on the week-ends than any other time. How about you guys?

ssgramma 10-02-2010 04:30 AM

For me, it depends on the weather. Hot & humid? I'm in sewing if possible. Freezing? Same story ;-)

Some days I can sew most of the day other days life interrupts my fun.

maryb119 10-02-2010 04:32 AM

As many as I can.....I sew on my machine on weekends and hand quilt in the evenings after work.

gollytwo 10-02-2010 04:36 AM

I'm able to sew 24/7
Rarely these days have I been in the mood to sew - by machine or hand
Have been sorting and cutting for 2 months, but no sewing.

deema 10-02-2010 04:39 AM

Not enough! lol

Its broken up throughout the day - 20 min here, 30min there during naps or quiet time. After the kids go to bed, I can sometimes get a solid hour in. I'm working on something like "warm wishes", so I'm piecing strips for cutting...I've had to leave half sewn strips sitting on my machine for hours before I could get back to it lol.

mom-6 10-02-2010 04:42 AM

It depends on several things...my mood, everybody else's expectations on my time (some I can control, others not so much), how frustrated I've gotten with the project I'm working on at the moment/how excited I am about starting a new project, how much time I spend on this board getting new ideas or just enjoying everyone else's work...but in general at least a little while almost everyday, some days 2-3 hours or maybe even more on occasion.

featherweight 10-02-2010 04:56 AM

I spend as much time as I feel. My DH is great about fixing him something to eat if he gets hungry. I have to be in the sewing mood or I will spend all my time "unsewing".

sidmona 10-02-2010 05:03 AM

Luckily I have a DH that is understanding about my addiction to quilting so I sometimes spend as much as 10 hours a day in my quilting studio. I am really lucky, he helps with making dinner and keeping the kitchen clean.

grammyp 10-02-2010 05:08 AM

DH works 7 on 7 off. So every other week I can sew almost all I want. The other week I don't get as much time to sew, but manage to get some in most days.

wolph33 10-02-2010 05:13 AM

it varies-but as much as I can.I have health issues so sometimes I go weeks without sewing/quilting.when I feel good it is all I do,all all I think about and dream about.I am a junkie and I am ok with that

raptureready 10-02-2010 05:23 AM

I have machines set up on each floor of my house so I can sew anytime, anywhere. I also have one packed and ready to go in case I need to sew somewhere else. I try to get in at least 10 hours a week but usually I do much more than that. If I do less I get jittery. I've been known to sew 40-60 hours in a week if I'm working on something that HAS to get done or if I'm doing something that I'm passionate about.

Pam B 10-02-2010 05:33 AM

Right now...not much. Now that school has started again I am just exhausted after teaching my kindergartners all day long. I have good intentions of quilting in the evenings but the reality is that after I fix dinner and clean up the kitchen I generally just collapse in my recliner chair for the evening. It is a gray, cool day here today and I do believe I will do some sewing today.

I'm in a slump too, if you could call it that. Been doing a good bit of hand sewing but not much else.

cjomomma 10-02-2010 05:45 AM

Here lately I'm only sewing 1 day a week and then only an hour or 2 on that day. Sometime life takes over or when I run into a snafu I have to walk away. Right now I'm waiting for WM to get the fleece in for a quilt so I can get it done, I hate waiting on wm. Guess I will finish Halloween decorations today.

Not enough hours in the day to quilt!!!! It seems like I find more time when everyone gets to bed...

seamstome 10-02-2010 05:55 AM

I can usually get 20 hours a week in. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings 7-10ish and 10 hours on either Saturday or Sunday.

SueDor 10-02-2010 05:59 AM

Like the other ladies have said, It depends on the mood, how you are feeling,if you have appts. to go to.

If everything is in order I can sew most of the day when my daughter (MH) goes to the workshop.

Also I might get more done if this board didn't exsist but then again I wouldn't know what I was doing if it weren't for the helpful quilters on here.

How can we help get you in the mood to sew? Cheer, sing, talk? Let us help encourage you to sit back down at the machine.

Char 10-02-2010 06:41 AM

Depends on my mood

great aunt jacqui 10-02-2010 06:48 AM

If I start in the morning after coffee I can go right through lunch.
If I'm excited about what I am doing I'll keep going. Then I start thinking about what I'll make for dinner. I've been known to go back and sew after DH goes to bed.
But am working on a peice for my neice who Im annoyed with right now, so I work a bit and stop. So I guess I am in a sew and stop mode. My mind is racing finish it finish it finish and give itto her and close the book on it.

Melinda in Tulsa 10-02-2010 06:48 AM

Having a sewing buddy has helped me alot. We get together once a week to sew and that has helped my motivation alot. I have a hard time getting started on a project. I can sew most anytime I want to, but my motivatation is lacking. I have a DH who is in bad health and that does terrible things to your mind. You never know what each day will bring.

Lately tho, I've been sewing more. I have a BOM to finish and now that the block's are done, I'm anxious to get it finished. I also have several other projects that need to be finished too, by the end of October. Also a baby quilt top that I need to quilt for baby shower next weekend. I wonder, if I will get it done in time!

kathy 10-02-2010 06:52 AM

I can usually get in an hour before I go to work at nine, then I'm home by 2.30, have coffe and visit hubby for an hour then sew till around 5, get supper done and sew from 7.30-9 ish, then I go to bed with some hand applique. I'm fortunate to work alone in a small businees so I have time to keep up with the board when I'm at work so it doesn't take up my sewing time !

Borntohandquilt 10-02-2010 06:54 AM

Normally I hand quilt 6 to 8 hours and if possible every day. I am in the lucky situtation to stay at home at the moment and only have to do the housework and the gardening. But that is not so much work...

amma 10-02-2010 07:31 AM

It depends... lately it is bits here and there throughout the day... Usually in the winter I spend a LOT more time at my machine :D:D:D

0tis 10-02-2010 08:34 AM

I spend most days in my sewing room - some times productive and other times just surfing the net. I am lucky too that I don't have to work and can spend as much time as I want - of course housework gets in the way. Darn housework...

Jim's Gem 10-02-2010 09:20 AM

Not enough!!! I only get from 2 and sometimes up to 10 hours a week to sew.

Quiltforme 10-02-2010 02:25 PM

It depends on if I have a deadline or my back is happy. If I have a happy back I will work at least 2 hours a day or more if i can handle it.

Shelley 10-02-2010 03:06 PM

I shoot for 40-60 hours per week - I LOVE my job!!. On the rare occasion that I don't happen to have a customer quilt to work on, I try to work on my quilts. You have no idea how far behind I am in that!!

plainpat 10-02-2010 03:09 PM

DH is retired & ok with me sewing whenever I want. Some days,I'll keep busy mqking quilt tops.Other days I've got my nose in a book. So it varies....mostly I do what I feel like doing.

I can relate to your exhaustion, Pam! I used to teach kindergarten, and I know how those little ones can wear you out! It sounds so much like my weekdays. I teach grades 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12. By the time I get home I'm often just too pooped to participate!! Several days this past week I got home really late because of after-school sporting events and a "Meet-the-Teacher Night." On that day I left home at 6:15 a.m. and didn't get return until 10:15 that night!! Then I had to start it all over again the next day. I felt like I was living at my school!! Sometimes when I get home I just want time to mellow out! My sweetie, on the other hand, is currently unemployed and has all day to himself. There isn't anyone in his life grabbing for his attention. He sometimes can't relate to how mentally and physically exhausted I am at the end of the day. I keep thinking that the school year will slow down, but I seem to be getting even busier. I never can get to my quilting as often as I would like.

I have just finished pinning a quilt and have it ready to be quilted. Now it's time to order something for me for dinner. My man is babysitting his two grandson's at his son's house so he probably won't be home until about 2:00 in the morning! That should give me a little time to get this quilting started.

nannyquilts 10-02-2010 03:12 PM

I work full time mon-fri at a local hosp. If I've had a bad day, I will go and putter around my sewing room. I wish I had more time to sew and I usually do most of my sewing on the weekends. I would really like to take some classes and my LQS doesn't have as many Sat. classes. I am self taught at quilting and I think if I had instruction I would sew/quilt more.

carolaug 10-02-2010 05:00 PM

When I sew I like to do it all day...7am to 10pm...and get as much done as I can. I have been cutting squares or strips on the nights my husband watches football...it gives me something to do yet we are both in the livingroom. Quality time...

Linda B 10-02-2010 05:12 PM

Some days I'm sewing, planning, etc for 8-10 hours. Others, it's 5-6. A few days here and there I am forced to go 'shopping' with DH to places like Harbor Freight, Lowes, Walmart, Gander Mountain, maybe the grocery store! But I might get to squeeze in a lqs and/or JoAnns, so I don't mind those trips too much!

sewingladydi 10-02-2010 05:18 PM

It varies-if my husband is out of town and I'm in the mood, I'll sew from morning till late in the night. Other days, I just can't get going and may not sew at all. Like most others, it varies, but being retired and child-free makes it much easier to carve out time.

littlehud 10-02-2010 06:28 PM

I always try to get in an hour or two on my days off. If it's the weekend I can get in more time.

Jingle 10-02-2010 07:00 PM

Since I retired June 2nd, most days I sew 6-8 hours a day,7 days a week and doing laundry and other home things. I do a bit of housework before I start each day. My aim when I retired was to make as many quilts as I could and try to use up some of my fabrics, Need also to stop buying more.

dotcomdtcm 10-02-2010 07:05 PM

If I don't work on my quilts every day, I get very cranky.
It can be handwork, cutting, or piecing. The swaps on here keep me productive and give me an opportunity to try new things. The weekends get hectic, so I try to keep Monday for me!

AnnieF 10-02-2010 07:08 PM

I work 40 hours a week but since I'm a night owl, I manage to work in at least an hour of quilting a night....sometimes much more....sometimes much less. I belong to a quilt ministry and we sew 2 times a month on Sunday for 3 hours at a shot...it's like heaven to me to have that much devoted sewing and talking time.

cherryberry 10-02-2010 07:20 PM

I leave whatever I'm working on, out ready to go in my sewing room. So I can run in sew for as little as 30 minutes on days that I work or all day on off days. It just depends on what else is going on. If somebody calls and says lets go, I'm going; otherwise I'm sewing.
