Please, do yourself a favor and don't just "blanket quote" (pun intended) a price...you need to look at what you're getting into BEFORE you tell them "how much"....it's okay to ballpark, but be sure to make that clear...when I first started, I used to charge a set price: until, that is, I did a T-shirt memory quilt! My pricing detoured to the "I need to see what you have in mind" mode very quickly after that. Good luck!

When I make a t-shirt quilt for someone, it usually ends up being about 77" X 85" and I charge $350.00. I add a 2" border around every t-shirt block and add two borders to the quilt before finishing it on my longarm. I also include a matching pillow case with each quilt. Depending upon the details involved in your quilt, for something that size I would probably charge about $450 for it. I make no excuses for what I charge because I think my time is worth more than minimum wage. Here's a picture of my latest t-shirt quilt. I work at a High School and asked each section in our band to donate one of their section shirts to this quilt. They will sell it next week in their Silent Auction fundraiser. They provided all of the shirts, and I donated my time and materials. We have an awesome band!

Interestingly enough I just had people inquire as to t-shirt memory quilts. I came up with this document for my pricing based on the average for what it would sell for on Etsy. Does this help?
Why did you not agree on a price before you started? I think this is why it might feel more awkward for you. Perhaps you should consider setting a general price list before you make other quilts on commission to help you feel better and to not have a shell-shocked reaction of clients when you give them the price. THAT IS WHAT I charge is 200 to 250 and they buy all the supplies. be sure to tell them in advance on the price that way they know and they can get the money together. they get the quilt when you get the money unless you know them well. good luck you will get faster as you do more. that is a lot of hours. post a pic of it so we can see it.

when asked to make bed size quilts I say right out I would love to. My base price is 400.00 to start. I get no takers and I can busy myself with my own quilting. I do get requests for baby quilts at 80.00. These are agreed to all the time.

i think you should have discussed a price before you agreed to make it- it seldom works well to (spring) a price on someone after the fact...if you are going to make quilts for people to purchase the price should be discussed & agreed upon before ever starting the project.
figure out how much time you have into it then decide how much your time is worth...then adjust that to what you think is fair to both of you- i charge $20 an hour for sewing...i also have quilting fees- if i am making a quilt for someone who has supplied the materials (very seldom) we decide if it will be charged by the hour or by the project- pricing is discussed, agreed on and a deposit is paid with the balance due upon completion. |

I once tried making a t shirt scarf for personal use and had difficulty sewing the t shirts well. What is the best stitch to use and all hints would be welcomed. If someone will basically pay what you ask and don't want to overcharge asking other quilters was a good idea.
