okay forgive my ignorance, but what is a feed sack and what was its purpose and why are they so desirable now.

That isn't so many, I'd say to keep going. And have fun! You need some darker ones unless you plan to use those light prints with 1930's solids. Just my opinion.

I didn't know what a feed sack was so had to google it (don't have them in the UK). They look so interesting. Would love to see the progress of your fascinating quilt.

Feedsacks are lots of fun! I own ONE and am happy with it! :)
The 30's fabrics are another story.......

Feed sacks were produced prior to the depression era and during that era and into the 40's. They are what flour, sugar, and other staples came in. They're fabric and during the periods many magazines published patterns from different manufacturers for clothes and/or quilts so more women would their brand. And yes.....like anything else that has to do with our quilting these are highly addictive! LOL!!

You haven't seen the amount I have ordered but just haven't gotten yet. HAHAHA!!!

I did the same thing... I LOVE LOVE LOVE feedsacks.. Ive got two 30gal tubs of feedsacks- most from local auctions for pennies a bag... I haven't used any of them in a quilt yet- i don't have the heart to cut into the bags.. I love looking at the holes the strings left on the sides of the bags and wondered who bought this one and what were they planning on making...

So with that said I started buying 1930s reproductions and its still hard cutting into them but I do love the quilts they turn out to be..

Thanks for the website history. That gave me a very good visual. I have grown up hearing about feedsack skirts that mom and her sisters would make from them. But I had another visual of canvas or burlap bags...not pretty sacks. I can see now why they could not wait for it to be their turn to get the bag or bags. (7 girls). Thanks for sharing. I may have to look into it for her a quilt. She would love it. But the sisters would then want one....Thanks again, Teresa
