I spy quilts
I was wondering what qualifies as an I spy Quilt. Is it just novelity fabric with a little bit of everything in it or what please tell this newbie what it is.

My avatar is a partial view of an I Spy quilt. It has 63 different objects separated by strips and cornerstones. It was fun to make .

Everyone is different .. for me an I-spy is a novelty, food, holiday or whimsical fabric that is scattered thru-out the quilt.. the child searches for the item.. No rhyme or reason..

These quilt look like a lot of fun to make. Is there a list of the items to find on the quilt or is it just what I child or a child at heart find.

There are lots of different I Spy ideas. Some use novelty prints that a child can easily Spy. Some have 2 of each novelty prints that can be matched to Spy. I have seen one on The Quilt Show site (I think) that was a game. The game had bean bags that each child tried to throw and land on different I Spy blocks. Some people use different shapes and coloured fabrics in an I Spy. Some are gender specific like Girls: dolls, ribbons, flip flops, crayons, etc. Boys: baseball, frogs, dinosaurs, cars, etc. I did see a site once where a list was provided with the novelty prints for the child to look for.

I spy quilts are so much fun! I think the first time I saw the concept it was on a pre-printed fabric panel with hexagon shapes each having a different picture in them.
Anytime I get novelty fabric scraps, I cut 6" squares. I keep a small box of them, and when it is time to make an I Spy quilt, I select the ones I want. My I Spy quilts are "match" quilts with 2 of each image, and they go to Project Linus. Rather than sashing, I use a checkerboard design with alternating squares being all of one fabric. I Spy quilts are fun to make when you have a child helping to pick out the squares and arrange them. Dayle |
The one I did for my first granddaughter included charm "I Spy hexagons" but I also included 35 hexagons of family member's pictures. I am glad I did as her paternal grandfather died a few years after.

It's really whatever design you want to use. Some use sashing, some not. There was one recently shown here, using HSTs and squares. Some are done as hexagons with inserts to look like stars. Some traditional squares. ... the possibilities are endless! |
