A few months ago, I finally taught my DH how to use my sewing machine. At first he was afraid of it. Didn't want to sew his finger. I did have him marking and cutting for me before but the house was becoming over run with 2 1/2 inch blocks. He decided that HE needed to "do something with them". So he learned how to sew. He is working on his 10th King size quilt top. The only thing is, he refuses to learn how to fill a bobbin or put it in. Now, he keeps me busy threading his machine. :roll: How can I get him to learn to fill his on bobbin????

Tell him it it part of sewing have his and her bobbins.

Does he have his own machine? Or are you sharing one?

He's using both of mine. He swaps from one to the other when he runs out of bobbin on one of them. I piece mine by hand so I only use the machine for putting on borders and binding. I don't mind him using them but he won't learn to do the bobbins. I have tried filling them ahead of time, so all he had to do is pop one in, but he is scared he'll mess something up I guess. He's really doing well matching seams and all. I mean, these things have about 2500 blocks in each one. Maybe more. I'll post a picture soon. Just haven't had time to take one.

I haven't tried getting DH involved with the sewing. I really don't know how much patience he would have with this. He loves giving opinions on patterns and colors though. It seems like he's always looking over my shoulder when I'm on the board looking (actually, drooling over some of the quilts posted) or when I'm looking through my books. All of a sudden another country is heard from. Ohhhhhh that's a really nice one!!! :lol: :lol: I just giggle to myself.

I know just what you mean. My DS loves to sew. He does a nice job too. But I have the thread his machine and wind the bobbin. It just intimidates him.

My hubby limits his quilting to telling me how to do it. He ALWAYS has something to say!

Like "you need more contrast, I like the blue better. There is not enough texture"! He used to watch Simply Quilts with me in the afternoons before they took it off the air. He was paying attention.

boy, it's nice to be needed. He probably wants to make sure you do this as a "together" activity, which is flattering, right?

Have you tried coaching him through it? actually making his fingers do the work while you stand behind him? it may take some coaxing, but with a "you can do this" attitude, I bet he will learn, just like he did with cutting and piecing.

Hmmmm..... Sounds like a good excuse to get a 3rd machine, so you can keep 3 running at a time for him!

Send him to the VIntage machine thread here- There are tutorials for cleaning and fixing up the old machines, and lots of info on bobbins. Maybe if he understood how the machine worked, he'd be less afraid of them? I bet Billy could help. (Lostn51).
