What does everyone use for backing? I'm really interested in hearing what everyone uses. Happy New Year......Cheryl

It depends on why I am making the quilt.....sometimes fleece, sometimes flannel, sometimes regular fabric.....usually end up piecing it, except for fleece, which is wide, already.

I usually use cotton fabric. I love it if I can find wide fabric but otherwise I piece it. I have used fleece and it was really warm

I've only used cotton for backing. It's usually not wide enough so I have to seam it. Someone here on the board recommended using 1/2" seams and pressing them open for piecing the backing; good tip, I think. I also ike to "piece" in leftover blocks/fabrics from the top when I can.

alot of the time i piece the back with leftovers from the front

would fleece be thin enough? Also, when using flannel, 50/50 blend or 100% cotton?

I love pieced backings. You can make really pretty ones and also use up fabric.

mostly I watch for sales - really good ones say of about 1/2 off or so - and then I try to find a print that I think will hide whatever screw-ups I make while quilting; or else I try to find a particular fabric to go with a particular quilt top. It took me some time to find just the color of pink that I wanted to put on the back of a 'vintage' repro yellow quilt top I'd just finished. I found some for about 4 dollars a yard and bought several yards. I have a particular 'stash' of backings I have bought and set aside for just that purpose.

Other times I cut and paste you might say, with what I have left over from the front. And I've also used just plain old tan muslin on the backs of more than one quilt. I once used a toile for a special quilt I made for a wedding. The toile was made for that I think as it was very wide.

Then I have made special labels for the backs and incorporated them into a sort of patch work type backing. It's fun sometimes to try to figure out how you can make your quilt more interesting by thinking about the back of it.

I usually use cotton or cotton blend sheets. I have used the extra wide backing fabric and pieced backs but sheets are my favorite. The price is great when I find them at thrift shops or garage sales, $1 to $3 each.
