OK- so I decided to do the Orange Crush on quiltville's site. I had read the instructions a while ago and decided to start cutting squares. So, I think I have enough for Step 1. I go online (after having some computer issues all week end) and read the directions. ARGHHH! I cut 160 4patch sets at 2 1/2 inches square. It calls for 150 sets at 2" squares. So I don't want to waste the fabric- any ideas what I can make them into? That's 640 2 1/2" squares we have hanging out.
I thought about adjusting the rest of the steps to match it, but since I don't know them, I don't want to create a mess down the line. Right now I have them matched as a light and a dark together. Do you think they would look stupid if I just made a bunch of 4 patches and grouped them some way and put sashing and made a quilt? At least I got the 20 pairs of flip flops cut out for future DIL's quilt. And I have 40 crumb blocks in a bag, just cause they're fun to do. And I separated fabric into small, med, and large scraps. Thanks for any help you might have! Barb |
Barb,
Why don't you email Bonnie from Quiltville and see if she can give you some other measurements to go w/ your 2 1/2 inch squares. Worth taking a chance. Or cut them down as you sew along to the right size!!!! Bebe |
I think 4-patches are always good, and with the sashing you mentioned, how could you go wrong?

I have to agree, improvise, and you might like it better than what you planned. :P |
I'll take pics tonight. I ended up making a 4 patch alternating with a square, then a sashing, then a crumb block. I thought it was looking cool until the 3rd row when I thought- hmmm, I'm eyeballing these rows, they could be off line. So I get the brilliant idea to line them up with my ruler. Guess what- my eyeball is better than using the ruler. So I set it aside to try to get some UFOs done, a baby quilt I finished yesterday. I'm working on future DIL's flip flop quilt and wanted to get it done this week, but I just started the applique on the first block so it won't be done. But I have the strips between and the border ready.
Then I started the Sunnbonnet Sue blocks for my other quilt, they alternate with crumb blocks. This will be for my Mom's side of the family reunion. The 6 I did so far (minus applique) are soooo cute. I'm going to have a hard time to give this one up. :) I'll take some pics tonight and post them. The first quilt is my "butt ugly" quilt- I already named it, because it certainly is. I will finish it, I just don't like it. I figure it will get used somewhere. Who knows- maybe when it gets bigger it won't be so ugly. Thanks for asking about the progress! |
Ok, now you have to post pictures of the "butt ugly" quilt too!
|
How's it going Barb? Did I miss the pictures you posted?

Thanks for any help you might have! Barb you will have to redo your four patches. I emailed and asked her if I could use 2 1/2 strips and she said it would be best not to because all the measurements would have to change and it would not necessary be the 1/2 difference. I had a lot of 2 1/2 strips. So that is what I wanted to do. Why don't you come on over to Links and join all of us doing the Orange Crush. It is under the heading Mystery. Also don't feel far behind. If you go and read the last postings by me you will see that I am resewing all my two inch four patches. :D Barb |

Barb, So sorry I didn't catch this post earlier, I would have suggested cutting them down to the correct size too. Never mind, what you've done with them sounds lovely. Don't forget to give us a squizz at them, cause we'd luv to see what you've done :P

So here are some pics- my butt ugly quilt, a quilt I finished for my daughter's girlfriend's baby- Izabella, and the flip flop quilt I'm working on for future DIL. I realized 1 flip flop block was on the machine, so there's an empty spot for a blue one. Also- pics of the Sunnbonnet Sue and crumb block quilt. I want to put a sashing between the blocks but haven't decided on a color. Probably blue, sinc ei made all the bonnets in blue shades.

Could someone please show me the butt ugly quilt/fabric???
|
barbM it looks great!!!!!! It is scrappy and I love that. You used scraps so you can't even say you wasted fabric. If you don't want it you can send it my way :-) I will PM you my addy
My mom has an ugly quilt that has been a WIP for three years now and she has spent $$$ trying to reverse the uglyness :) |
You can't see the ugliness? Just what I was hoping- someone would be able to make something of it. I think it's absolutely disgusting. I will finish it- to a full bed size. It can always languish as a car cover or something. Maybe a few more rows can improve it. At least I didn't waste any money on it.
|
Sometimes you just have to step back from your quilt and let other people enjoy it for awhile! I love the crumb blocks - I've never heard of that - they're especially cute with Sue - tell me more
|
I love, love, love the flip flop quilt!!!! Did you get the pattern somewhere or did you improvise?
|
Those are all lovely Barb, I luv the flip flops and Sunbonnet Sue and you have certainly put your four patches to good use
|
The flip flop pattern came from the latest Fons & Porter. I sent the magazine it to Terri in Guam. I changed it a bit- the flip flops are the same and the strips between the rows are the same but it had log cabin squares surrounding it and I wanted to use the fabric in squares Terri sent me. The flip flop one is from my stash- I did purchase the yellows, but I've already decided to use the leftovers in my other quilts. The sunbonnet Sue is the BOM and I added the crumbs- all from my stash. And of course- the butt ugly quilt is from my stash. Lots of stash busting going on, but it isn't eliminating the tub of scraps. :)
Barb P.S. Trying to get away for a bit- my step daughter had a baby 5 days ago and needs some help. trying to figure how to pack a machine and tub of scraps besides all the stuff I need to get to her. I can always leave the machine behind for her as I have 4 now. But, the excuse for the tub of fabric???? I can always work on my applique or crumb blocks. Now what to do on the 10 hr. drive..... can't read, I get car sick. Am taking the laptop so I am "connected" to work. May not get to go anyway- issues with my back up here for work and babysitter for the dogs. |
BarbM: Don't see any "butt ugly" quilt here.........The little girl you are going to give it to will have lots of fun things to look at. (one ladies uglyness is anothers beauty!!) Your Filp Flop quilt is cute as are the others.
Hope you get to go see and help you Step daughter with the new baby! |
Wow, I love all of these quilts! Glad you posted the pictures because I couldn't figure out what a flip flop quilt was. Thought it was reversible or something. Dah!!! :?

On one of the threads someone mentioned placing a type of stabilizer before doing the applique. I wish I could find it now so I could personally thank the person who recommended this. But- THANK YOU! This has made a huge difference. The flip flop quilt is the first one I've ever done applique on and I did 3 blocks without freezer paper, then added freezer paper to the back and- they look sooo much better! Ok- I do need more practice, but they are looking better and better. I've been trying all the different stitches on my machine so it's a lot of fun. Half way through the blocks, hoping to have the top done by the week end.
Just wanted to thanks to all the tips and help I've received on this site! You guys are the BEST!!! Barb |

The flip flop quilt is finished! I added a close up of one of the blocks. My border changed as I was getting tired of it. I'm happy with it. Doing binding on one of my WIPs tonight and 2 of the 7 WIPs are done. Back to the crumby Sue quilt, need that in 3 weeks for family reunion. Seriously thinking of no more family reunion quilts. Too much time and $ for free. I figured a way to fix the butt ugly quilt- making a 24" carpenter's square in the middle. With a border, it will replace 9 squares of crumbs and make it more calming. First- the Sue quilt needs to get done. Have to keep on schedule- can't stand these WIPs hanging around.

Looks great, Barb!

Thanks! Gave it to Leanne- future DIL last night. She loved it. She said she always wanted her own quilt to snuggle with. I put light blue fleece on the back so it's soft and squishy.
It was her belated birthday gift- 1 week late, but at least it was close. |
Better late than never, right?
Glad she liked it. Well, I'm off to bed......... |
night night
