Insane or not?

Okay, since I did so well this year at my local quild quilt show by placing third with just a everyday easy pattern I have decided to amp things up some. I was thnking about what design to use for next year and I have come up with one. I know some are gonna think this is just absolutely absurd to even think about trying to recreate this but I love love love this pic and am gonna give it a shot. What do all of you think. Big ambition or just plain insane.
The plan is to do it all in applique using some fabric markers to add the dimension to it where the fabrics will be lacking. So any ideas or suggestions. BTW, the wings will be left out of the quilt. |
Just plain insane!!! LOL I could never even attempt it but you seem to have the confidence and so I say go for it girl.
(Iassume you're female. My apologies if you're a guy). |
It will certainly be an ambitious project. I wouldn't even know where to begin myself. I love the picture and can't wait to see it in a quilt.
Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so we each react to and are drawn to different things......thank goodness! How dull the world would be otherwise! This will probably be spectacular in applique, and certainly a challenge for you to create. Enjoy the process without only thinking of winning and you'll be happy with your finished product.

I hope you use real dangley (is that a word?) beads around her face. That would be so cool!
GagaSmith- yes I am a female.LOL
Scrapngmom- I am still thinking of where to begin. Jan in Va- The fact that it is so different is what drew me to it. I am a true believer in different can also be beautiful. Yes, I plan to do most of it in applique since I seem to be better at that than pp. Lisa- Thanks for the idea. I was planning on just using the fabric markers to add the details of the beads on gold fabric but I may just add some real beads instead. |
i say...knock yourself out!
I think adding real beading is a fantastic idea maybe use crystals for the snake eyes? Glad it will be hanging at your house (couldn't come around a corner to those snakes!), but it is a striking and dramatic depiction of Medusa. I agree with Jan stay focused on creating the piece for you and any awards will be the icing on the cake!! Can't wait to see your masterpiece!
yep! totally insane! that said...go for it!
You can do it! You Can do it! Go for it.
Can't wait to see the finished Quilt
That is so Beautiful. Post photos as you go along please! I could never do something like that, but surely admire those who can, and do!
i think it will be awesome looking cant wait to see it finished. GOOD LUCK
Would I attempt it, no but I am not good with faces. If you love the image, then give it a try.
Looks insanely ambitious! Have fun.
Does Medusa hold any meaning for you?
Medusa is great. I think you can do it, and you can do it well! We are our own worst enemy placing obstacles in front of ourselves. I believe people (especially women) can accomplish whatever they decide. Good luck and keep a bottle of vine and some chocolate handy. There are bound to be some bumps. Happy quilting. And yes, I would lose the wings as well.
great idear --progress reports please
Have fun with it!!
I say go for it, girl !! I would try something like that, but would need a lot of time. I like the idea of using real beads, also. I'm sure that it will be beautiful
Yes you're totally bonkers in my book! I'd love to see it when finished, because I wouldnt even know where to start. Adding jewels and textures in this one would be interesting. In my mind I see more going on in the background of the quilt, perhaps telling the story of her existance.
Great picture!
You can do it! Partial, because you like it so much, that'll make it easier for you. I would be eager to start! It looks complicated, until you break it down in smaller sections. This has so much potential, unbelievable the embellishment you can do with it. Don't worry, I'm confident in you. Remember you take one bite at a time. I wish I had the pic.. Keep us up to date with your wonderful project. |
an ambitious goal for yourself ..which to me is always a good thing...i hope you post the finished project
Great idea with lots of possibilities. Share your progress.
beautiful and my first thought was to embellish with swarovski crystals.
Your design is beautiful, I love art quilts. I wish I had the talent to do them. Go for it and keep pictures of your progress, I would love to see them. Just be sure to not get so caught up in winning that you don't enjoy the process.
That is a very ambitious project, but you can do it. One step at a time, and take your time. Should be beautiful.

I say go for it too... You can try lots of different techniques on it... from beading to thread painting.
Practice on a couple of small pieces until you are comfortable on your finish piece and I'll bet it will come out GREAT. I love insanity.. It makes the world go around. |
Wow, I am blown away by the response so far to this post. Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Not only to all of you that have posted here but for the PM's as well. So now to answer and respond to some of the comments and questions. Yes, I do beleive I have lost my mind. But hey thats all part of the process.LOL I have decided to add some beading and crystals to the finished item. After giving it much consideration I do believe that I may bring the size down to a large wall hanging since once the beading and crystal are added it would make washing the item very difficult.
For those who have inquired about whether or not Medussa has special meaning to me the answer is yes. Not in the way that most would think though. As alot of us probably have been through, I am not exactly the beautiful swan that most of the world looks for. I am pretty but not in the typical sense that most think. I have dark hair, dark eyes, I am not rail thin, and never have been. I am the unexpected beauty that one finds when they really look. I have always been seen and thought of myself as different. I love to see the beauty in things that are different and no the norm. So, with that yes this picture of Medussa is a representation of how different, odd, bizarre, or wierd however you wish to word it can and is beautiful in its own right. I have always known that most see the odd and strange as well odd and strange. They tend to have a hard time looking past that and seeing whats really there. So with that said. Here's to all of us out there that are not the norm, considered an odd duck or strange in some way. This is one is for you, me, and all the others like us out there. Be strong, proud, and most of all embrace and love your beauty. |
When I create for my own soul, I have the most success. If this is something that calls you, I say "go for it." Whether the judges find it pleasing would only be the cherry on your own icing.
My head just thinks about trying to make a quilt like that, but I would LOVE to see your final product. Go for it!
I am looking forward to seeing that absolutely wonderful Medusa hanging in a major quilt show in the future! You go for it!!!

If you've not already, go to a couple major quilt show and look closely at some of the fantastic "art" quilts. (hope that's the right term) You might find some techniques to help yourself.
I looked at the picture again. I can see some golden braid. I can envision some slinky ribbons becoming snakes. And the amber beads around her head. Can't wait to see your creation.
I assume you know about this, but I thought I'd post it just in case you didn't. Several colors by different makers out there.

I am looking forward to seeing your version. Good luck with it and give us some progress piccies please.
Snakes, wings, "three whites", oh my! That's a very ambitious project. I agree, she's beautiful. I think I'd leave the wings on, though. And maybe make her irises hit her lower eyelid, lol! It's great you are challenging yourself. Faces are difficult, though. The snakeskin fabric in the link by Lisa wanna b quilter is perfect! Have fun, and good luck!
By all means, go for it.
