I was thinking about doing one of her quilts. Has anyone done one of them? How did you like it? I love foundation quilting. thanks

Yes, I've done one quilt and have another pattern to do someday. I also did a tree skirt pattern - The Twisted Star. The quilt I did is in the picture below and was relatively easy -- a good project for someone not too experienced with paper piecing (this was my first one). The other pattern I have is the Bali Wedding Star which I expect to be more complicated but exciting to do.
If you get one of her patterns, I would strongly urge you to go to the 'corrections' page on her web site to see if any apply to the pattern you purchased. Good luck and enjoy. |
I've done her patterns and they are great! I like that you get the foundation papers in with the pattern you buy. And the designs turn out so well~
|
Your quilt is BEAUTIFUL. I have never done paper piecing.
|
Beautiful quilt. I think the Bali Wedding Star is the one I want to do. I was going to do the small one for the end of the bed. Thanks
|
I have done a couple of her patterns they are great and turn out just lovely
|
My sister was just telling me about these. She's done one and has several others.
|

I'm in the middle of Japanese Fan and think I'm over my head!!! Fortunately I have a quilt shop I can go to for help.
|
Hey Linda, What a fabulous quilt! I have one of those patterns waiting to be made...Thankd for the inspiration!

Always wondered about PP. Is it a pain taking the paper off?
|
I have taken classes with Judy and even if you know how to Paper piece they are not for the faint of heart!
I am workin on drunkards wave and have the Celtic star in mind next! YOu will buy tons of fabric to do her quilts and will have tons of leftover bits to use in another quilt! I suggest you start with something easy before attempting the bali wedding star.... IF you ever screw up your paper though, simply call the shop and they will send out replacements free! |

very nice pattern

My sister and I have made a couple of Judy Neimeyer quilts. They are a bit tedious, but what you get in the end is so absolutely fabulous, that it is worth the work! It was really nice working with my sister--if there was any question about the pattern, we worked it out together.
|
I love Judy Neimeyer patterns and am currently working on her Amazon Star. LOTS of paper piecing but its my weakness!
|
I made her "Fourth of July" quilt (and finished it!) I loved her method! She gives you "template" sheets for cutting out your fabrics. These pieces are very generous. I took everything to Staples and made copies of them because, you will need to and because I didn't want to use up everything - just in case I wanted to make another one! The pages are 11" x 17" - not a home printer size sheet of paper.
Everything went together very nicely. Would make another one of hers, if I could find the time! :) |
I love Judy's patterns, i have done her crossing arrow pattern and i'm working on the bali star. I like to recylce as much as i can so i print out the patterns on paper that comes in the UPS boxes its a brown packing paper. i iron out the wrinkels then cut it to size works well in the printer . and yes i have allot of little bits of fabric left over and for now i'm putting the snippets in a bad to use at a latter time.
Small stitches are a must when PP. also PP quilts take time.. so enjoy the proccess |
I would love to try her patterns and kits, they just look so dificult for a newbie like myself. I have also never doner paper piecing.
Do you prefer to buy her kits or just the patterns? Are her kits all precut fabric? I wish there was a quilt shop in Calgary that sold her patterns and was certified teacher, I would love to take a class. |
Linda, love the quilt!

I ordered the Glacier Star pattern last week and waiting on it to come so I can go get copies made of the foudation pieces before I try the quilt. I want to have the extra copies in case of a mistake or some thing and who know? I may want to make another one too. I printed out a picture of the finished quilt from her site and this way I can look in my stash for colors. So far I have maroon, blues and greens and the like so it will be a beauty. I just hope it all goes good. Looking forward to getting and starting mine. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay......P.S. I did go to her site and printed out the corrections she has on this pattern and I will have that when I need it.
|
I have "Raindrops" but have not done it yet. I was planning to do it for my son for Christmas but if I don't get going really soon, it will never be finished on time.
|
I have one that I am going to start as soon as I get some of my UFOs out of the way. I love her designs, but I plan to use the freezer paper method to do mine. I'll check in later to tell you how it's going. :-)
|
Never done one of her patterns but I love the pic of Lindas quilt.
|
I just went and looked at some of her patterns. They are beautiful. Good luck with yours.
|
I love her patterns and am currently working on Amazon Star.
It will take me some time, but well worth the effort! |
I've got the first two techniques done on my Glacier Star quilt and it is going so well. Now on the technique 3 and it is the lone star part. I got the floating geese for the lone star done yesterday and it went nice and smooth. Got the NYB blocks done with in 3 days. So some of the techniques take longer than others. But almost half done is pretty good. When it took my 2 months to make the lone star that is my avatar. I usually don't think about how I'm going to quilt it until I have it done and then I audition diffrent template and stencils for quilting on it to see what fits and such. Every one have a great day, Huggies, Fay

That's the one I want to do next. I'm glad to hear it is going well. I start back to school tomorrow and the kids come next week so I have no idea when I will be able to start. :-) |
I'm almost done with the lone star part of it so so far so good. Huggies, Fay

Vicki - I am so glad you asked about Judy Niemeyer and that I came across your topic. Do any of you have a favorite web site you use that might have a selection of her patterns? Any further recommendations for beginners? |
Hey I'm on technique 4 on my quilt and it was a bugger as it is the snowflake part of the lone star and I think it is comming together pretty good now. I had to frog stich a few times, but got it to go right. This piece can be confusing as it doesn't look right when you first start it, but going together pretty good now. Huggies, Fay..... Oh I forgot, The lady at the store I ordered mine from sent me an email yesterday and said the she has a pattern for the exended border on the Glacier star quilt to make it into a queen size bed quilt. I'll have to check it out.

BuzzinBumble, the name of the Judy Neimeyer quilt I did is "Indian Summer." The quilt in my avatar is a modified kaleidascope from a patttern in "Encyclopeida of Classic Quilt Patterns." Thank you and others so much for the nice comments on the Indian Summer quilt.
|
Linda that is gorgeous! I love the movement in that pattern! She has some great designs, I love her stuff
|
Is she the one who does the kaleidoscope quilts? I have a tote bag of hers but am nowhere nearly talented enough with fabric to ever attempt a quilt with her designs...I saw her on CBS Sunday Morning Show once...way fun!!
|
Love the Judy Neimeyer patterns. The paper piecing makes perfect points possible! I am working on "Christmas Celebrations" tree skirt by Judy now. I am really enjoying it.
My avatar is Japanese Fans by Judy also. |
I would really like to take a class from one of her certified instructors. I am sure there are a lot of tips to make it easier....it is not that hard but I am sure there are some tricks to the whole process that I could use to help me along. the closest one is about three or four hours away...don't want to travel for monthly classes. It is not that hard so I will just keep going on my own.
My first JN class was not by a certified instructor and she had us all cut it out wrong. Fortunately I figured it out that the cutting instructions that the instructor gave us was the LONG LONG LONG way of doing it so I came home and did it my way. It still took about six to eight hours but the other lady in class spent 36 hours cutting. Glad I figured it out before I started cutting the cloth. 36 hours is a long long time! |
The website is quiltworx.com. If you win any awards on your quilt with her patterns, send a photo in and you will get $10 off of your next order from her.
by all means, check for "corrections' on her website before starting any of her patterns. It will save you a lot of frustration as her patterns are so intense (is that the right word?) that errors are easily made when the pattern is first drawn up. |
Wow ! I'll have to send in a photo of my quilt when I get it done. When I started mine I just started the first technique and did the cutting first as per instruction and then did not do any more cutting on the rest of the technique until I was ready. I'm almost done with the 4rth part and now I'll be doing the sawtooth thing that goes on the lone star part of it . I first thought I was doing it wrong as it did not look right, but it is going together pretty well. Had to take a break and watch my show, Ghost Hunters and then I will get going on it again. Foundation piecing can be tedious, but it is so much fun to see the out look of it all once you get some thing done. Actually this is the first quilt I'm foundation piecing, but got a lot of practice wiht the Mariners compass and the NYB blocks that I had been making. Those will end up in a quilt one of these days too. Can't wait to get this put together so I can post it. Have a great evening, Huggies, Fay
