The "Super Size Nine Patch" makes pretty comfort quilts. Just goggle the pattern name and you can download the directions. Easy and pretty.

That is totally cool.
I have way too many scraps, and I would love to se them. I made two denim quilts, and a flannel rag quilt in the past year. I can whip some throws up in no time, but I don't have a clue what size they should be. I even have a lot of flannel scraps for backing. The total cost to make them is zero.

I just want to tell you that you are a really special person to care so much about these elderly people. I think you are totally awesome in a great way. I think you are a champion! More power to you!!!! I have some nursing homes around here that I think I will check into and see if I could make a couple of blankets (I'm slow) to help a few of the residents out. And if I could give some of my sweaters to some of the gals. You are on the right path, straight to heaven!

I make lap throws for the nursing home patients all the time. In fact I just took 6 of them yesterday and the activities director was so, so happy to get them. I generally just use a basic 4 or 9 patch block, or perhaps a yellow brick road and sometimes a log cabin with 2 1/2" logs from scraps. I also use orphan blocks when I have them. I also would like to make the patients simple jackets or maybe wheel chair bags but haven't found any really simple patterns for these items. I know they would be very much appreciated.

There is a Quilt Guild in east central Mississippi who for several years has made lap quilts, wheel chair and walker caddies for private nursing homes in their immediate area as well as veterans' nursing home and nursing home within 50-75 mile area, in fact as many as 75 for some of the nursing homes. This is some of the community projects they have done as well as learn different techniques in quilting for themseleves. Most of these are quilted, some by hand, some by machine or hand tied. I make these throws all the time and I buy the warm and natural crib size batting which is 45 x 60. I usually make the throw about 42 x 58 so I have very little waste

This is such a wonderful idea. I'm checking my stash this weekend. I'll bet that here in the Detroit area there are plenty of nursing homes that could use the shoulder wraps and wheelchair wraps!! Love this list for great ideas. My kids and dgks have plenty of mine stuff, so this is really timely!

The Take Five pattern might be useful and quick for a lap quilt.
