I designed knit quilts and one of them is of musical instruments. Although I am a beginner at machine quilting, eventually, I want to design a machine quilt of musical instruments. I would like to know if anyone has ever done a quilt of musical instruments and if you would share your technique with me. I have a grandson who is a guitarist and I would like to make him a quilt with pictures of guitars.

Welcome Novice, I made a couple of musical instrument quilts. I used machine embroidered images I got from www.emblibrary.com. It was a lot of fun to make. I am attaching a picture of the small one. They have many other instruments.

I took a picture of a guitar to a coping store (like Staples) and had them blow it up to a full size quitar.. layed it diagonal on a plain black background fabric and then free motion quilted musical notes and stars all over the quilt. using black thread. I also use gold (or yekkow plain thread) and silver metalic thread on the quitar for the strings and bars on the guitar. This I did before it was appliqued onto the background, I traced the quitar onto sew in interfacing (light weight) then sewing on the lines that I traced on the interfacing sewing it to the right side of the guitar fabric then make a slit in the interfacing and turn the fabric right side out this takes care of the seam allowance and makes it to where you can decorate the guitar before applique to the background fabric... I took pictures of the quilt but have not idea where they are... Hope this gives you some ideas. The guitar looked real from a distance.

Hello and welcome from SW Iowa. I would love to make a musical instrument quilt for my brother. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I wish you luck from Michigan. I have been collecting music/instrument fabric for about 8 years hoping to make a quilt for my son who is a trumpet performance major. It was supposed to be for his bed in his first room as a freshman, now I just hope to get it to him before he graduates from college. I did use some of it to make a table runner for my choir director at church using the Cotton Theory quilting method. It turned out very well and won a blue ribbon at our 2009 Michigan State Fair. We will have to share pictures.
