Lucky you!

congrats.
You will love her. I have had mine for about two weeks and I love her. |
Congrats., I have 2 and love them. If you look in some of the quilting catalogs, you can buy books by Nancy Johnson-Sabaro giving you the history of the Featherweights. I have all 3 of her books and find them very interesting to read. It makes you want more of those cute, workable machines. Enjoy yours. :D

Congrats on the FW. Looks like you got a beauty. They are so fun. Right after I got mine I cut up a bunch of scraps for leaders and enders and stacked them next to the FW. Then I decided to sew "just a few." Before I knew it I'd done them all! Enjoy working with your new girl. Did you give her a name? Never thought I would name a machine but I call mine Ray after her original owner.

I have a 1941 Featherweight that I found when I cleaned out my in-laws home a couple of years ago - you will love using yours for quilt tops. I found the best book for learning all about your Featherweight and how to maintain it - it's called The Featherweight 221 and I by David McCallum. You can email him at :
[email protected]. He also has a website at: www.featherweight221.com. |
Your FW is fantastic. I hope you enjoy sewing on it as much as I do mine. They are a great little machine for piecing.
|
Lovely! Welcome to the club! I went from one to three in a month or two. Actually, I got my first, took it to a Singer dealer looking for bobbins etc, and got my 2nd, within 2 hrs. They attract one another. I have many machines, but love the feel, smell, look, sound, and stitch on these beauties. Haven't tasted them yet....hmmmm....

I was wondering, exactly what is a feather weight? Is it just a plain machine used for straight stitch and especially for piecing? I worked in a factory once where I sewed on labels in the neck of shirts. The machine was tiny but very fast. You could zip around those 1x2 inch labels very fast. I wish I had one of them. of course you had to sew in a lot of labels in a day to make minium wages.

It's sure pretty!!

Mine was born in '54! Her name is "Sharon" for my sister who gave her to me!!
|
Oh so happy for you!
|
Don't have a name for mine but I have had her since 1970. I bought her at a Thrift Store for 25.00 the year before I got married. She still sews like a dream and is so lightweight and easy to move around. I made all the dresses for my wedding on her. Love her
|
WOW what a beauty, have fun getting to know her!!!
|
I am a recent FW "mom". I named her "Miss Kitty" because she purrs like a kitten when she stitches. Also, she was born in 1957, and in that year there was a TV program called "Gunsmoke" and a character named "Miss Kitty". So, I have "Miss Kitty" to sew on. I am looking for "siblings" for her.
Congrats on your new FW. Enjoy her! |
A Singer Featherweight 221 is a straight stitch sewing machine. It is about 1/2 the size of a normal machine and is very light weight. About 11lbs. The old Singer sewing machines were made of cast iron and were approximately 25 to 30 lbs in weight. The body of these machines are made out of aluminum and thus the "featherweight". They are a jewel to sew with and I love mine to do FMQ on smaller projects. There are several attachments that can be purchased to do a variety of things with these machines. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. The average cost on E-Bay is $225 to $275.

You really make me want a feather weight!!!

I don't know if you have dated your machine or not. Here is a site I went to to date mine.http://www.singer-featherweight.com/

Thanks for the info. I am going right by a quilt shop today and they carry the featherweight. So don't know if I can pass the shop up or not. It sure sounds like a new toy to me.
Thanks again |
I have a Pfaff Expression and a Bernina QE, but got to say that absolutely LOVE my little Featherweight. In fact, I just did some much needed maintenance on it;cleaned, oiled and lubed it according to David McCallum. I love his website:
www.featherweightRX He is a guru when it comes to featherweight machines. His book is very helpful and you can purchase just about anything you might need on his website to keep your new "baby" in good condition. Sadly, my machine had not received much TLC in recent years, but to see it now you would never guess. |
How lovely that you have an FW now...I think they're such a great machine !
