I took the advise of quilters on this board (of course!) and made a Rail Fence quilt for my dauhgter's birthday. Now I don't know how to quilt it because the front has 3 colors. Is an all-over meander oh with purple thread or should I skip the grren and white blocks and meander only the pirple or maybe just SID?? Please help...thank you!

I did not adjust tension, just whipped this up real quick so I could get it posted!

Maybe I should use invisible thread?

TootieAnn 02-02-2011 07:45 AM

I like the all over meander. Pretty colors! Happy Birthday to your daughter!

nativetexan 02-02-2011 07:45 AM

well you have to do more than just the purple..... maybe use white thread or beige or even gray. not sure. It will be loved no matter what color you choose.

jlong 02-02-2011 07:45 AM

Someone on here suggested gray and I like to use that now when there are many colors.

Maybe a variegated thread, or possibly a compatible shade of grey.

littlehud 02-02-2011 08:00 AM

I don't like the clear thread. It sometimes is stiffer after a while. I like the purple.

Busy Bee 02-02-2011 08:00 AM

Maybe a green thread. OR a Gold thread to match the stars in the purple.

sidmona 02-02-2011 08:01 AM

I agree, a variegated thread would look pretty.

dixiebelle162002 02-02-2011 08:04 AM

I really like the purple I think it adds to the quilting.

the casual quilter 02-02-2011 08:08 AM

I like the purple.

trif 02-02-2011 08:15 AM

Definitely would not use clear to quilt, my opinion. I love the variegated thread look, however when I feel uncertain and an not in love with my thread choices, the old stand by is a light grey, it blends in well with all the colors and won't make your quilting the focus. Good luck deciding.

AnnieH 02-02-2011 08:17 AM

Good quilting. Suggest variegated or grey. Have fun, she'll love it.

quiltlonger 02-02-2011 08:22 AM

Whats daughters favorite color? and what are you binding in? I like the green or a gold to bring out the stars and do all same color will pop or blend when going over your three colors.I don't care for invisible thread either. It will be wonderful what ever YOU decide.

4girlsmimi 02-02-2011 08:25 AM

I like using the varigated threads.

oldmountaincrafts 02-02-2011 08:41 AM

I agree with the varigated thread. I was at my LQS on Monday and was looking at their varigated threads and they had one that was the purple & lime green. That would look awesome!

kathdavis 02-02-2011 09:09 AM

Varigated thread is great!

Butterflyblue 02-02-2011 09:11 AM

I like to use variegated thread, but I also have lately started liking gray when the colors are widely different in a quilt. I took a quilt that had a variety of very different colors to a local longarmer and she suggested it. I was very happy with the results. If you don't want the quilting itself to be really noticeable, a gray might be the best choice. Do a couple of test sandwiches with different colors and see what you like.

KathyAire 02-02-2011 10:00 AM

I like variegated thread when I have several colors. If I were going to use purple on your quilt, I would rather go with a lighter shade of purple.

OK..not going to get quilted today. Think I will go shopping before it gets too cold!! lol

girlsfour 02-03-2011 05:01 AM

ME too. I like it!

cjaye44 02-03-2011 05:15 AM

I like the variegated idea and the gray...try samples of each like the one you posted with the purple .

Stitchnripper 02-03-2011 05:18 AM

I have used variagated thread on my rail fences. I like the result

Hen3rietta 02-03-2011 05:21 AM

I think the purple looks great myself. My second choice would be a medium gray that would disappear or a more formal quilting pattern that would show off a colored thread.

DianneRab 02-03-2011 05:30 AM

As a thought, what about yellow or gold thread. Would add a glittery affect to the whole quilt. The results will be beautiful what ever you decide, and don't forget to show us when you have it completed.

How about the lighter color in the dark - is it blue? And use a thinner thread, like a regular piecing thread, rather than a heavier machine quilting thread, to quilt and the stitching won't be as dominant.

Fabaddict 02-03-2011 06:28 AM

how about trying a gray thread? might blend in better with the white and green

erma bauer 02-03-2011 06:49 AM

if in doubt, i always use ecru and like the way it blends with everything. by the way, does anyone have a suggestion for donating old and very beautiful greeting cards? do they take them at nursing homes , schools, or hospitals? i can't bear to throw them all away and need to get rid of them.

missgigglewings 02-03-2011 08:03 AM

Well...I did venture out to my local Hancocks and they did not have the lime green and purple thread! The manager there said some new stuff was coming in on the delivery truck thursday and she will call me if they get some in. OK..I can wait 2 days!

Oh yeah...one of my friends working there gave me 8 pair of jeans for my grandangel! The trip was worth it...yay for recycling!

kateyb 02-03-2011 08:05 AM

I would use whatever of the colors is her favorite and meander all over. Or check to see if there is a varigated thread with these colors.

Marvel 02-03-2011 09:20 AM

I think it would be very pretty if you just do it all over. Your colors are great. Good contrast. Marvel

catrancher 02-03-2011 09:25 AM

I love variegated thread.

joeyoz 02-03-2011 09:43 AM

I like the all over meander with the purple.

karen65ae 02-03-2011 09:48 AM

I always use variegated thread when there are a few colours then I don't have make a decision on one colour..lol

Louise607 02-03-2011 09:51 AM

I might try the variegated, then you would see some of the stitching on the darker fabric.

svenskaflicka1 02-03-2011 10:04 AM

maybe a bright or varigated yellow, to set off the stars, and contrast with the other colors?

JNCT14 02-03-2011 11:25 AM

Another idea is to do a FMQ design in each block - something like a set of circles or a flower design - might give it some dimension. I did this on the Think Outside the Block quilt I made and also an eight pointed star quilt I did for my dad - they came out pretty nice.

I am doing two rail fences right now. The center I have stippled and on the border of the first one I did butterflies using golden threads paper. Then I took the paper off and decorated the wings. Then I stippled around the butterflies.
