New Iron

My Rowenta went to heaven and I need a new iron. I want one with at least 1500 watts and no Auto Shut Off.
Have looked everywhere I can think of. Does any one know where I can find this iron?

vondae 05-24-2013 08:57 AM

I have an $8.00 Rival from the $ store that I love. I'm not sure what the wattage is but, it get's very hot & DOESN"T have the auto shut-off. I bought a much heavier GE but, I don't like it at all. TO heavy, auto shut-off and just doesn't seem to get as hot as my el-cheapo. Good luck in your search.

Phyldar 05-24-2013 09:28 AM

If you have a Big Lots nearby, check there. They often have name-brand irons and I have seen ones without the auto-shutoff there.

DebraK 05-24-2013 09:48 AM

Irons in heaven? That just don't sound right ;-)

klgls 05-24-2013 10:58 AM

I recently bought a new iron - thought I got one without auto shut-off - appears I was wrong. Went and got the $8 Rival at Wally-World and love it!

quilter41 05-24-2013 11:03 AM

Why not? I believe the Angels like their robes wrinkle free. I guess I am Old School. I iron or press everything. DH wouldn't wear rough dry clothes.

MadQuilter 05-24-2013 11:06 AM

Can you iron gossamer? lol The one I just bought is another Shark which gets quite hot but it does have an auto shutoff.

I figure that an iron these days lasts about 2 years with quilting use, so I will not invest a lot of money.

BellaBoo 05-24-2013 11:21 AM

I am not very wifey when it comes to catering to DH likes and dislikes about laundry or any other household chore. LOL. I have the B&D Classic and I'm happy with it. It's the one I take to classes and it's been dropped many times, still works and steams great. I found the no auto shut off one at Lowe's.

debbiemarie 05-24-2013 11:23 AM

Does a steamer work for quilting? Actually for Ironing fabric before cutting?

DogHouseMom 05-24-2013 12:17 PM

Try the Oliso. 1800 watts, a long auto shut-off (which I love), a very long (12') cord. They're pricey ... but I think they're worth it.

Wrinkles in heaven don't sound right either ;-)

Dang! I just passed on that $8 iron cause I thought something that cheap couldn't be good!

dunster 05-24-2013 05:26 PM

When my Rowenta died, it certainly didn't go to heaven. Think flames. I bought a Reliable Digital Velocity V100 iron. You can put it in the "no shut-off" mode, or leave it in the mode where it shuts off. It's 1800 watts, and built so that it cannot leak. The steam is fantastic, though I usually iron dry.

There will be no irons waiting for me in heaven:)

You might want to try "Tuesday Morning" also. They are a discount store that sell household items and a little bit of everything, including quilt and art supplies. They don't have a lot of these, but their prices are great and quality is also usually very good. You can also shop on-line with them if there isn't a store near you.

gotta-sew 05-24-2013 09:46 PM

Why not another Rowenta? That's what I have been using for many years and it doesn't have an auto shut off. Love it.

mo-rie 05-24-2013 10:04 PM

I bought a Rowenta nine years ago without an auto shut-off. It is still working fine. IMHO I will never buy an auto shut off Rowenta again! The three I had were short-lived. My other fav irons are the three I picked up at thrift stores...all Proctor Silex and love them! $3 each!

Jim 05-25-2013 12:54 AM

HomeDepot also has an iron that I've heard many quilters like. No steam and no holes. Don't know the wattage.

I love mine too, works great!

nativetexan 05-25-2013 02:39 PM

well many, many quilters have complained about Rowenta's catching fire. mine was fine for years but finally blew out my power cord. no fire but it went into the trash. I have a Shark but am still looking for a good iron.

ube quilting 05-25-2013 03:02 PM

Ha-ha. Rowentas don't go to heaven.

I just bought a Reliable Velocity after my third rowenta caught fire. (it is bright orange) It has a disable mode so you can leave the iron on or use the auto off. I love it. It really does not leak and has great steam that you can turn on and off as you use the iron.

I got it through All Brands. This machine is usually about $100.00 but I got it for $60.00 cause it is a returned piece and the box was open. It was a chance but a good one so far. I love it.

to use the disable mode you hold the steam button in for eight seconds and the lights blink to let you know. It does have to be reset after it has been unpluged but that is a little thing to do. Having steady heat is important to quilters.

hope this helps a little.
peace

EDIT: Newer rowentas have auto off

bigredharley 05-25-2013 03:04 PM

My old trusty Rowenta stopped getting hot enough, so I read on the boards how good the shark iron was....its been relegated to laundry room, I hated it for quilting. Bought a cheapie no-shut-off at Wally World, hated that too, although it's light enough I'll take it on my retreat. Went to Costco and got myself a brandy-new Rowenta and am a happy girl again. It does have auto-shutoff, but I'll deal with that.

JENNR8R 05-26-2013 02:45 AM

I bought a Euro at a quilt show and love it. The show price was quite a bit less than the online price. It never shuts off and lays flat on a teflon pad. This eliminates the added wrist action that is necessary to bring an upright iron horizontal. That saves on carpel tunnel pain in a big way.

The demo at the show was quite impressive. This is what they advertise:

"It has one tempurature that works perfectly on any fabric, from denim to lace and even silk. It will never burn, scorch, leave a shine or crush any fabric ever" http://www.eurosteam.us/

lclang 05-26-2013 04:03 AM

Try Amazon...they have a plethora of different irons. I bought a little travel iron and I love it for quilting, no auto shut-off and steams fine.

maviskw 05-26-2013 05:02 AM

I thought my Sunbeam Iron wasn't getting hot enough several years ago, so I bought a Black and Decker. It's still in the box unopened; I'm still using the Sunbeam. It "hasn't scorched yet", but it does the trick. It has a very long auto shut-off when standing on end (I think it is 14 minutes), but only about two minutes if the iron is flat. That means I have to tip the iron up a little every once in a while while I'm doing a lot of flat pressing. But there is a light on the handle that blinks when the heat goes off, so I know when to flip it.

I don't remember where I bought it, but it may have been at a rummage sale. It has a 12 foot cord and see through water tank. Since I only use distilled water in it, it has given me no trouble in the last 10 years or more. I have directions on how to clean the water tank, but I've done that about twice since I've had it.

Expensive is not always better. Right now, I'm looking for one of those smaller travel irons to take to classes.

BuzzinBumble 05-26-2013 05:08 AM

My Hamilton Beach Smart Lift iron is a great iron for quilters. It props itself up off the board with two arms and it has the choice of using the auto shut off or just staying on. It gets really hot and can make a lot of steam if desired. Bought it on Amazon a year or so ago and it was not expensive. Sorry, can't remember the wattage.

After the second Rowenta in three years died a horrible death (thank heavens it didn't set afire doing so!) I purchased a Reliable (blue and white one). This was more than two years ago. I am totally pleased with the Reliable iron - with absolutely everything about it - including the ability to disable the "Auto Off" feature! I would certainly choose it again.

brenwalt 05-26-2013 05:28 AM

I buy an inexpensive "Rival" brand at WalMart. About 5 or 6 dollars. No auto shutoff, great steam when you want steam. I leave mine plugged in all day when I'm working on quilts. It lasts about a year before it dies then I just go and buy a new one. It is light weight and I love it. I should probably buy a half dozen or so in case they quit making them!!

Pat of Abington 05-26-2013 05:32 AM

Someone asked if a steamer could be used for quilting. I have a steamer but You can't press seams with it. It takes wrinkles out beautifully but you need to press the seams to se t them.

shasta5718 05-26-2013 05:35 AM

I have a couple of steam irons without shut off, but the one I like best and use the most is a GE dry iron, it gets hotter faster and so far has lasted about 30 years.

ShirlinAZ 05-26-2013 06:25 AM

I got mine - a Continental - from Amazon.com. I think it cost about $15. I love it.

I am going to check to see if Home Depot has the one you say has no steam. Mine has steam, but I never use it. With the water here get too many mineral deposits in it. I would like one without steam. Now if I can find one....

Amen!!! I think they get a bad rap sometimes but mine is close to 25 years old and is still going strong with zero problems!!!

The Home Depot website says the iron is no longer available. I bought one here: http://www.always-free-shipping.com/...-dry-iron.html and keep a watch on Amazon. I bought another one there for $15. These no steam irons make great door prize gifts for guild and secret pals love them!

madamepurl 05-26-2013 08:37 AM

OMG! I have the Rowenta that won't shut itself off. It's the blue on at Joanns. The 8090 I think... anyway 6 months in the tank leak and the pump broke. I sent it to be repaired. Another 6 months and the tank is leaking again. I'm just going to use it dry, but really! Ugh. I have the $8 beauty from WalMart and another one around $15 from Shopko that doesn't shut off and they both work wonders. The only thing is I wish it has a stainless sole plate, but really they remind me to press and not iron.

I also have a nice B&D digital advantage. If I'm listening to a book it's ok, but all that dang beeping while it shuts on and off is so annoying. It only has 15 minutes, but as I left it and went to fix dinner the other day... I'm thinking I should stick with the auto on and off. (lol)

Oh... I did have the Rowenta Steam Generator... that is what they use at my LQS. Well, that dang thing blew a leak and water was coming out of the on/off button as well as everyplace else. I thought for sure it was going to catch fire and I pulled the plug.

As for the Oliso, my friend went through 3 yellow ones and all the feet failed and burnt her ironing board up good. Thanks goodness she was in the room when it happened. She finally demanded her money back. She bought it at a show and they did pay up.

I have yet to try the Reliables. I asked at a quilt shop we went to the other day and the lady said she didn't like them, but they worked. Since they start around $100, I'm thinking right now just sticking with cheapies.

blueheavenfla 05-26-2013 08:37 AM

I like the sounds of this iron....where did you get it and how much did it cost?

I have a Rowenta Powerglide 2 (no longer made). It has no auto-shut off. It steams well and heats up very quickly. I keep thinking it'll die so about 5 years ago I bought it's replacement model (Focus) when it was on sale at JoAnns. I haven't even turned on the Focus yet, as my Powerglide 2 is still going strong. I used to use it all the time but I do a lot of PP and it's too heavy for that. I discovered using a travel size Rowenta and it worked great but only lasted a couple years when the collapsible handle broke. At $40 I wasn't willing to go buy another one at that price. I went to Target and got a Rival for less than $8. I use it dry but it can steam. It's very light in weight so my wrist doesn't get tired using it for long periods.

I would give serious second thoughts to Big Lots. I was surprised to find a Rowenta iron for $20 there so I bought it. The price should have been a clue but was not familiar with Big Lots. That thing not just dripped, the water just poured out as I used it. Then somebody pointed out to me that their appliances are "refurbished" items. Rebuilt from items that previously didn't work. Says so on the box but it didn't occur to me to read the box. I tried to take it back but they refused since I didn't have the receipt. Now I don't even look at their appliances. I thought that was bad customer service over $20 but the mgr. didn't seem to care. So be careful if you buy an appl. there.

d.rickman 05-26-2013 11:03 AM

I just purchased from my LQS a "Reliable" brand - digital velocity, and I love, love, love it, you need to read the instructions, it says only distilled water, and to hold down the right hand steam button until the light under the button
goes out (about 5 seconds) and your iron will stay continually on at the temperature you want until you want to use it. It is a nice weight and you can use it dry or steam. I leave it on usually from 5 am until 2 am the next morning, and it goes through one of the measuring cups that comes with the iron. It says only babies drool and spit, and if you use
distilled water your reliable will never do this.

mamaw 05-26-2013 12:55 PM

My Rowenta does not have auto shut off and love it!!!! It is the Powerglide2, not sure if it is still out there for sale. Oh my goodness...this is an awesome deal....I paid alot more for mine!!!
