I'm having trouble coming up with a size. When I get something for the width I get something ridiculous for the length, or so it seems. Like if I go for 12" blocks, I get 84" x 108". If I'm going by the approx. quilt sizes ccbear66 posted, that means I haven't even hit the minimum width and hit the maximum length. And this is without the 12" drop I want to add.

The top of a queen mattress is 60 by 80. I usually do a queen 84inches square, then the top of the quilt comes to the bottom of the pillows, and hangs over the foot of the bed the same amount as the sides. You would do it 108 long, if you want it to be the style that goes right over and tuckes under the pillows.

I like the idea of the black border as the drop. That puts the focus on the bed top where all your pretty work will be. It will also cut down on the red which is the batik. Maybe the black will be a bit less expensive. Wish I had EQ too. Saw it in action for the first time at a friends house. Red binding. Just my 2 cents worth. I know there are many quilters more experienced with this than I am. It will be beautiful whatever you decide. :!:

How about 87"x93", included with a 12" border on the sides and a 6" border on top and bottom? I believe that would require 9" blocks.

I would definately use the red border. Sounds like she has a standard size double bed.

I like my quilts big enough to hang down to the top of the dust ruffle, and tuck over the pillows. About 80x100 would be generous. I would love to get a quilt like that as a gift!!!

I made a queen size years ago, before mattresses got so thick and it was 90 X 120. The 120 is still a good number because I like to put the pillow under it and use the quilt as a spread on top of the sheets, but since I have a much thicker mattress nowadays the 90 is kind of skimpy. If they do not have a queen, it would still look good on a double bed. Most people now a days opt for a queen size. But like I said, I would go with a little more than 90 for width. I agree with you that the wide border is the way to go and I love the link to thousands of bolts. I just spent a fortune there buying fabric for my DIL's quilt! Much cheaper than the fabric stores here in town.

I could make my blocks 10" with a 12" border on the sides and a 6" border on the top and bottom, making it 94"x114. Think that would be better suited for a Queen if she decides to get one?
