I want to make a Mariner's Compass quilt so badly BUT I can't stand to paper piece so I need templates! I'd also like to find it online so I can use the projector at work to enlarge it to about a 36" block to hand piece....and only make 4 blocks for a whole quilt. I've looked and can't find one with templates.....but you all are so good at finding things that I'm asking you to try!!! PLEASE??????
Thanks so much! teacherbailey (aka Dotty in Tucker GA) |
Your idea sounds great and I hope you find a templalte for it or you may have to design your own.
I have always PP these. I love your puppy. Maybe you saw my look alike on another post! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-143030-18.htm#3926734 |

Why can't you use the PP foundation to make the templates?
There are really only a few unique shapes. Just add a seam allowance to each piece. How many points do you want? |
MTS, such a simple solution, I should have thought of that.

If you're interested, I have a Mariner's Compass pattern that has templates. I have never opened it but on the back it says that the book includes templates (these appear from the back to be acrylic templates). If this is something you would be interested in, PM me.

Cheryl Phillips has a great book...Wedgeworks 2...that has Mariner's Compass up to 32 points. The Mariner's Compass is acutally 3D. No paper piecing, but you do need the wedge ruler. I have made a couple, they are fast, easy and fun. I hope this helps.

I made a "compass" from Wedge Works II and it came out really good. The acryllic templates are included with the book.

I made 2 of them with the Cheryle Phillips pattern and they are 3 D and I love the one on the wall. Some where in the picture section is my quilt. You can do a search for it, but I had all of the piecing done in an evening. It has 32 points I tihnk. It is by far the easiest mariners compass I have made. Good luck wiht what ever you do. HUggies, Fay

Check out Quilt in a Days book Radiant Star Quilts.
Its made with strips. Havnt done one yet but I trust El Burns patterns to be the easiest to follow. No templates needed. |
Tim did one awhile back

Are you familiar with Quiltsmart? It's a line of printed fusible interfacing which has a Mariner's Compass, amoung other patterns. Very, very easy and quick. Have done this pattern, their dahlia and their Lone Star - all are template free and make for nice sharp intersections. Check out http://www.quiltsmart.com/khxc/index...arinerscompass

One of my first quilts was a Mariner's Compass. 15 years later, I wouldn't even want to try to do one without the paper. Every seam is a bias edge. Do you hate paper piecing that much??
