So I am a new quilter and I was reading on this board that there are people who like to collect scraps from other posters and make quilts out of them. So starting with this project, I've started saving my scraps. I was not a huge scrap saver before- I've always saved the bigger pieces but not anything smaller than maybe 3"x3"- so I've started saving the scraps I'd usually thrown away in a bag thinking once the bag is full, I could send it off to someone that would use them.

Anyway, today I trimmed off the extra batting from the sandwich and was wondering if I should save that too. Would anyone be interested in a bag of batting scraps? Some are skinnier strips, but some are a few inches wide.

Just let me know! Also, how small is "usable"? For example a strip that is 1" wide... should I put that in the giveaway bag? Or throw it out?

I don't know of the batting scraps, but 1" pieces are a definite keeper :)

Pick up a free Priority shipping box from the post office. I keep one next to my cutting table and toss scraps in as I go. It really helps keep me from collecting too much. When it's full, mashed down, full again and mashed some more, I post it as available for the cost of shipping.

I am the type of quilter that is unable to throw anything away, all the batting pieces that are trimmed off the sides of a completed quilt top are kept. (As a Long-Arm quilter it accumulates very quickly). After several months of accumulation, I post it for free on Craiglist to anyone that wants to pick it up, there is a huge response for it. It's a win - win situation. They are very happy to get it, I am happy to give it a new home and we have met another quilter in our area.

I've used very small pieces of batting for things like kitty cat toys or small pincushions. I think you could save them for a give-away, if you don't use them yourself!

My scrap strips are used for log cabin blocks. The other scraps I save and use as stuffing for my pillows!

I would definately save and/or offer the batting scraps. I just got some flannel for a rag quilt and glad that I have saved all the Warm & Natural trimmings from previous quilts to use on this quilt.

I use them as stuffing when making my dogs' a new bed. They don't seem to tear it up as bad as the polyester stuffing.

They can also be used as pillow stuffing.

They can be used for QAYG projects, I often use a long armers batting scraps for mine, cause sometimes I only need 6 inches square. I haven't made a 4inch square quilt yet, but I keep all of those scraps. They are good for placemats, coasters, Christmas presents...

I save my scraps and the local humane society has a girl that makes them into beds for the animals so even batting is usable for that. They stuff all the scraps inside for stuffing.
