i was afraid to try circles, even though i did set in sleeves years ago, i forgot. finally took a class and now beat myself up for being worried about it. it proved to me that i can do those things if i just try. sometimes the first effort isn't so hot but at least i now give it a try. also, was worried about needle turn applique. took a class and found out i could do that too. however, i also found out that i don't care for doing it.

still have not made that lone star, bargello, or new york beauty; but i will eventually because i can. luckily i have waited so long that others have come up with quicker and easier ways of getting them done.

What baffles me, however, is that certain patterns or techniques just intimidate the living daylights out of me. I don't know why. They just do. For me, it's the Bargello quilt technique. I admire those who applique and I've seen lots of beautiful appliqued quilts over the years but it's not a technique I have any desire to master. I'll leave it to those are good at it. Yep. It's Bargello. How about you?

So far no quilt pattern has intimidated me. I used to sew clothes. Nice clothes too, set in sleeves, pointed collars, button holes, zippers, etc. I've done tons of machine applique and paper piecing. I made a New York Beauty with paper piecing and curved seams. Bargellos aren't hard, it's all straight piecing, you just have to keep track of where you are. That said, there are quilt patterns I'll never do because I find them tedious and fussy or too old fashioned.

I'm with you - I'll make anything appliqué, but hate points. If I do a pattern that has piecing I make myself do it first, before the appliqué or it won't get done, lol.

I so agree! I am left-handed and dyslexic and paper piecing is not in my vocabulary!

For those who are afraid to attempt a Mariner's compass, try Peggy Martins "Quick strip paper piecing", a Craftsy class. She leads you through paper piecing very nicely. She has a quilt there that is called "Sailor's Delight" which is a version of a mariner's compass. It was the first paper piecing I've ever done and it came out quite nice. She leads you through a few different quilts, ending with the New York Beauty. Good luck trying. I'm still a klutz with other pp but found this class worked for me.

I will try pretty much anything. For those who are afraid of paper piecing have someone show you. I read and read and re-read the instructions and wasn't sure what they were talking about. Someone showed me a 5 minute demo and it was like DUH! I have done a little bit of applique and don't like it. I'm not a fan of handsewing.

Intimidated? Yes indeedy.... by anything involving a curved seam - and needle turn applique can make my stomach flip flip as well....

Nope, just make notes of what size each pieced piece is-----------then add together.

I'm with you. I look at the paper pieces and think,oh my Lord!

Anything in a diamond pattern. Don't think I will ever do a Lone Star pattern.
