Quilt As You Go ideas
 

I have seen a quilt as you go template set at recent quilt shows and passed it up because I saw no use for them, until today. Basically it's a large square template with a small square template inside that's removable. With the larger square you cut the backing fabric. With the small, the front fabric and backing. Does anyone know where I might find more information about this technique or have experience using it? Can use any suggestions and ideas.

Basically, that's all you need to do. I would leave the top cut 1/4" wider all the way around. Then you can sew top blocks together (after quilting) being sure to butt backing at seam, then turn and hand stitch the backing together. One of the first quilts I did was a block to block log cabin pattern, and it worked out well. If you feel you need a template, just make one out of cardboard or that vinyl pattern maker stuff (lol). I can't remember the name of anything at the moment. Info overload.

Sound like the QAYG method Fun and Done (but names sometimes getpassed around and referenced to different things).

She didn't use the ruler, but brings the backing to the front.

But there was another quilt on her, with a pastely watercolor backing , where each block was framed separately and then put together (almost like English paper-piecing).
It was really quite spectacular looking.

Yes, that's the fun and done ruler. I will say that out of all the QAYG techniques, this is my least favorite. I don't care for the really wide borders on the front and it was really difficult to get the seams from adjacent blocks to line up.
