I often set several fabrics I think might work next to a block and stand back and walk away and return until I make a decision...when I can't figure it out I take pictures & ask this board for their opinion.

I take blocks to the store too and lay them on blocks...lots of times shoppers will help.

Audition different fabrics with your blocks. No cut & dried rules when creating.
