sewing room built into the garage...my dd idea
 

We are in dire need of a sewing room for me. As of now my sewing has ground to a halt because of space and time. My DD said that we could make a room out of a corner of the garage. I am all for a room just for me but there are many concerns. Im afraid that all the dust from his woodworking will make its way into the room. I dont know if the cost of doing this is worth it either. Has anyone else tried to creat a room in your garage and do you think it stays clean?

I think your concerns are legitimate. I'll be interested in seeing what others suggest.

I would only consider it if the space was enclosed, not shared with the wood shop. Then you can control the dust, but now you have to deal with H/Vac. YOu will need to control the humidity also. The only Garage to sewing space conversions I've heard of is where they have converted the space to living area first.

Similar to PaperPrincess my neighbor did convert part of his garage to a controlled environment for his wine collection. Later on it was converted into an extra bedroom with it's own half bathroom. It was beautiful and clean.

This is something you would need a good contractor to do for you. If it works for you go ahead. Remember to put in extra electrical and good lighting.

Am looking forward to knowing what you decide to do.

Have you considered one of those storage buildings?? They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, with insulation and walls it should be a great place. Should be easy to cool and heat also AND it will be yours only.

I had a friend who had her long arm and fabric, etc. in her garage. She had improved the lighting and there was indoor/outdoor carpet on the floor. It was very clean whenever I saw it. I don't think anyone did any woodworking in there, but it does seem to me that a car was parked on the other side some of the time. She must have had an a/c unit, because that was in a very hot climate.

When we built our house we built a large shop out back which my DH did not use that much for woodworking. He just had it more as a storage for his "junk". So he enclosed about a third of it for me a shop. It is completely contained with roof, walls, windows, ac, heater and TV. I love it, it is not fancy, but then neither am I. It is 11X17. He put inexpensive paneling on the walls, shelves, pegboard for hanging, 4X8 design wall, very large cutting tables. The cutting tables are large enough to put a 24X48 large ironing board at one one and still have plenty of room for a large cutting mat.

I turned my attached garage into my sewing room. It had heat in there already and I just added a lot more lights, outlets, did the drywall and threw a new floor in there. I still have to work on the ceiling. I don't mind if that takes a long time to get done. It's so nice to have the extra space to work.

If you put a room in there that is completely enclosed, I don't see there being much of an issue.

I'd also worry about the woodworking dust. If there was a way to separate your sewing stuff from his wood working stuff then it would be a good idea - as long as you can heat and cool it. Nobody wants to quilt in the summer in a 100 degree room ;) Do you have a dining room that you can take over instead? We ditched the whole dining room designation and turned it in to a video game room :)
