Someone please talk me down!

Was at a meeting last week and while discussinig door prizes for the annual meeting, the Secretary mentioned that she would be happy to donate things from her home - which she can't move into till all her grandparents' stuff is removed. She was describing things - then said"I even have two of those little Singers in the black boxes,,,"
After further description, I turned to her and said "We have to TALK!"
I really don't need another sewing machine - even if it is a Featherweight. I have my grandmother's 201, my Pfaff 1222e, my Janome 4800 and my daughter's Janome (more basic) - as well as a Singer 99 coming home to me this spring from Thunder Bay. But I have wanted a FW to take to classes, etc. Plus I can't really afford one right now ...
Someone please talk me through this!

Grandma Peg 01-14-2013 10:11 AM

It will depend on the price and making sure if it needs a good home!

mighty 01-14-2013 10:13 AM

Sorry I am a sucker for 221 and 222!!!!!!

JulieR 01-14-2013 10:23 AM

Be strong!

Unless it's free, is it free? In which case, I wish you strength in getting it out to the car.

ontheriver 01-14-2013 11:08 AM

Sorry, cannot help, I say go for it, I would.

dunster 01-14-2013 11:11 AM

Go for it! A FW is great for most classes. How could you not at least go look and find out how much she wants for them?

Grama Lehr 01-14-2013 11:13 AM

Now, that's a real DOOR PRIZE!!!

Prism99 01-14-2013 11:14 AM

Sorry, I'm an enabler! :)

Seriously, this is like going to the bar for help in not drinking. :o

gramma nancy 01-14-2013 11:55 AM

Featherweight? Resistance is futile.

NJ Quilter 01-14-2013 11:58 AM

Sorry, but depending on price, I'd be one of the ones talking you INTO getting it!

Knitette 01-14-2013 12:05 PM

Think of the good turn you'll be doing her - she'll be able to move sooner ;)

OKLAHOMA PEACH 01-14-2013 12:20 PM

Sorry, woman if you don't hock your kids for it, I will.

NikkiLu 01-14-2013 12:23 PM

OMG - see about at least getting one of them! They sure don't make them like that anymore. I have been more sorry about things that I did not buy than things that I did buy.

patski 01-14-2013 12:23 PM

go ahead and buy them! (lots of help from this group)

Ellietow 01-14-2013 12:27 PM

I'm with everyone else - I have a 2 vintage machines (one a featherweight), and I'm stopping at two - but if a featherweight came up at a reasonable price, I'd get it in a heartbeat. If it's not affordable for you right now, you could consider a swap of some sort - or make a quilt for her.

fien777 01-14-2013 12:44 PM

sorry, although everyone here says just the opposit...you say you can't afford it right now?
If you really really can't just don't do it.......IMHO....unless you can swap to get it for free

Jennie and Me 01-14-2013 01:13 PM

Do you have kids or a pet...will she trade?!:p I too, am an enabler...find some way to get one of them...they are great!

ArtsyOne 01-14-2013 01:24 PM

Speaking from the experience of a very long life :) I will tell you that I have often regretted the things I did NOT buy. I'm still kicking myself that I didn't buy the life-sized wooden pygmy for $95.

Jackie Spencer 01-14-2013 02:05 PM

Run don't walk! Opportunities like this don't come along everyday!

sewingsuz 01-14-2013 02:10 PM

I want one!!! go get them please. My heart is pounding.

Queen 01-14-2013 02:57 PM

You won't get any support from me. I have 2 and love them both.Mary

AUQuilter 01-14-2013 03:53 PM

And how many granddaughters do you have? (I saw your footnote.)

AuntieD 01-14-2013 04:13 PM

Offer her a reasonable price and take it home!!

DogHouseMom 01-14-2013 04:21 PM

I guess I'm looking at this from a different perspective. This woman offered these items up as a *donation* for a door prize.

Sorry ... but they were offered as DONATIONS. That is what they should be.

Perhaps you'll be lucky and win one.

Julie, I really needed a laugh tonight...very funny comment! :-) Laura

Silver Needle 01-14-2013 05:09 PM

They are great machines. My DH is parting with one of his to ship to my daughters in CA so I can always have one of my own to sew on when I visit.

Thumbelina 01-14-2013 05:15 PM

What's to think about go for it, I would for sure.

Debbie C 01-15-2013 03:40 AM

Who are we kidding here? It's a FW!! There is no question what you must do!!

Two - but they are about the only things I wouldn't trade ... :D

SuzzyQ 01-15-2013 04:37 AM

And thanks for suggesting making her a quilt in trade ... wonder if she'll go for it ...

paulswalia 01-15-2013 04:52 AM

You should ABSOLUTELY not bring those machines home for yourself. Instead, give me her name, phone number address and a schedule of when she will be available and I'll talk to her for you (ah, for me.....) LOL

Me, too! At least go look ---- sorry...

flowerjoy 01-15-2013 05:23 AM

I have an old featherweight and love it! It is the perfect machine for classes - I believe it only weighs 11 lbs. My other machine is a Janome and although I really love that one too... it is too heavy to lug to classes. I cant help you be strong... if it is a featherweight it will be the best indulgence ever!! If she is donating for a raffle, try to buy all the tickets!

Think I'd like to have seen that almost as much as the Featherweights ;)

reginalovesfabric 01-15-2013 05:45 AM

I have two fw, my future son in law bought me anohter one for Christmas and my daughter told him I had enough and she took it.....now she has to learn to use it. I buy another if I could....something wrong with me.........

sewbizgirl 01-15-2013 05:47 AM

It's a rare opportunity, so find the money from somewhere!

jeanneb52 01-15-2013 06:03 AM

GO GO GO Run, my child. You can never have too many machines. Face it, the kids now spend as much on sneakers! You deserve it, at least check it out.

solstice3 01-15-2013 06:11 AM

If the machine is in good shape and the price is right grab it!!! If you decide later that you don't want to keep it you can always sell it for what you have in it or a little more. Would love to find a FW that could be converted to a crank.
