There is another thread (no pun intended  ) going about what kind of thread is preferred by everyone. It's interesting to see all the types and reasons.

My question is: do you buy a lot of thread colors for piecing? I only buy black and white for piecing after I realized that I haven't been using any other colors for a long time. I have a wider color selection for quilting on my LA but I use 40 wt. to quilt and 50 wt. to piece.

Am I the only one who feels she doesn't need a lot of colors for piecing?

White, black, light and medium beige for me for piecing :D:D:D

I ended up looking for answers to this very question the first time I did some actual piecing and realized there was no way I could match all the colors. The links I found all suggested black, white, beige or grey, and I find one of these neutral colors usually works pretty well.

Occasionally, if I am able to find a color that works better, I will use that instead. For instance, when I made my ballerina quilt, I found that Gutermann had a soft mauve that blended really well with both the pinks and the purples in my fabrics.

For piecing I mostly use a neutral/cream or gray.

I use a cream color cotton thread for piecing unless I'm piecing a lot of black, then I will switch to black.

When piecing the quilt in my avatar, I used black for the black blocks and cream for everything else :)

black, white, gray, beige. My plan was to get a bunch of different colors so I could use them for piecing or quilting. But now I think I will get different thread altogether for quilting, like the 40 wt, in colors and stick with the neutrals for piecing in 50 wt.

I used neutrals except that I have gotten some good thread deals at quilt shows....sometimes I will use those if they are close in color. But I don't specifically buy matching thread for piecing. It's too expensive to do so!

I never use black unless the fabric is black. Iuse cream, beige, even light lavender blends with a lot of colors. But I find white and black are to "stark" and show too much. Saw a lovely quilt at a show and the lady pieced it with all black thresd, it showed thru all the seams.
