I took a class last year and made a quilt that had a 1/4" black border surrounding each block. (Never again!)

The teacher suggested we cut the black strips at 1" instead of 3/4". Sew them on with the regular 1/4" seam. Then from the back, line up your ruler on the seam line and trim to the correct size. It did make it easier to cut and easier to sew on.

I think I would have cut one inch, and fold it vertically to have a two dimentional
edge around each block or better still, make it a one inch sashing.

Those tiny strips really do make the blocks pop.

It did turn out nice, but there were a lot of tears of frustration with this one! It was my first on-point layout. There is one row that I had to add fabric to the sashing to get it to line up. But it's so busy, you can't see it now. And the written directions were terrible! I guess that's why we have our fabric designers or patterns.

I did like the way the 4 patches were made. Kinda like a kaleidscope technique. 4 layers of the same cut, twisted any pleasing manner.

Just wanted to pass along the tip I thought was helpful!
