I took a class last year and made a quilt that had a 1/4" black border surrounding each block. (Never again!)
The teacher suggested we cut the black strips at 1" instead of 3/4". Sew them on with the regular 1/4" seam. Then from the back, line up your ruler on the seam line and trim to the correct size. It did make it easier to cut and easier to sew on. |

beautiful quilt...
Oh that is beautiful! I cringe at the thought of all those tiny strips tho. Great Job. Sure you dont' want to do another?
WOW,Beautiful! And the black tiny strips are perfect! Thanks for sharing!
I think I would have cut one inch, and fold it vertically to have a two dimentional
edge around each block or better still, make it a one inch sashing. |
Gorgeous quilt!!!!!!
Great tip!!! thank you! the quilt is beautiful
Those tiny strips really do make the blocks pop.
It did turn out nice, but there were a lot of tears of frustration with this one! It was my first on-point layout. There is one row that I had to add fabric to the sashing to get it to line up. But it's so busy, you can't see it now. And the written directions were terrible! I guess that's why we have our fabric designers or patterns.
I did like the way the 4 patches were made. Kinda like a kaleidscope technique. 4 layers of the same cut, twisted any pleasing manner. Just wanted to pass along the tip I thought was helpful! |
That is beautifull!
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful!!! That is a lot of little borders but it sure makes the quilt!!!
such an undertaking so early in your quilting (career  ), but you did fabulously.
Your right, I don't see anything but beauty :-D |

Thank you for sharing this tip :D:D:D |
I really like this quilt. Will you explain that technique in a little more detail? Maybe tomorrow it will make more sense to me.
Lovely!!
Thanks for the tip and for showing us such a beautiful quilt!
Your quilt is beautiful and your black strips are perfect. Thanks for the tip!!
It's a beautiful quilt but can see where that narrow sashing would have driven you crazy.
That is beautiful. The black really makes the pattern pop.
Wow, love your quilt! Yes, it's busy but beautiful.
And, a good reason to take quilt classes. Not just to make a pattern, but the little tips that go along with the making. I tend to overcut and trim when working with little pieces, but boy, the block you are sewing to must also be straight to not show with black! Never mind the trimming  |
Great tip, thank you. :)
Oh but that sure was worth it! It's beautiful!
What a gorgeous quilt!!!!!!!
Gasp! That's a beauty!
Thanks for the tip. Never thought to do that and I often do quarter inch borders!
It is so effective on your quilt which is lovely. |

Basically you cut large and trim down. Instead of cutting 3/4 inch black strips -1/4" plus 1/2" seam allowances - I cut 1 inch. Sewed it onto the blocks using the normal 1/4 seam allowance. Once sewed on, from the back of the block, trim off the extra 1/4" using your ruler rotary cutter. Thanks for all the great comments! You gals are great for the ego. :-D |
I love everything about that quilt!
