I did like the way the 4 patches were made. Kinda like a kaleidscope technique. 4 layers of the same cut, twisted any pleasing manner.

Just wanted to pass along the tip I thought was helpful!

I went back and studied your photo and couldn't find where you said you had to add onto the sashing to make it fit properly. It all looks very symmetrical to me, you've done a good job! That's one reason why I don't like making symmetrical designs. Too putsy and I feel like I'm shut in a box.

beautiful quilt!

maryb119 01-24-2010 09:49 AM

It's a beauty!!

Stitchnripper 01-24-2010 10:01 AM

that's a great tip. Kind of like making half square triangles a little bigger and cutting to exact size

LindaR 01-24-2010 10:08 AM

gorgeous...black really stands out

harkness48 01-24-2010 10:15 AM

To get a similar effect, you could use what the Ozzies called a peeper or popper. It peeps out & it makes things pop.
Cut 1", iron in half, & place it between the 2 fabrics being sewn, - as if you were putting piping in, but this is larger & flat. Looks great. We did a bright quilt with black as one of the dominant colors, then the border had a black background, but, you know it, all blacks are not the same, so I put a red peeper in to separate them, - did the trick plus looked great.
I first saw this when I was there on vacation & went to my sister in laws guild.

Yes, I've done something similar by putting in two of these narrow borders in different colors to make each pop against each other and the other wider border. I like the name "peeper" too!

I took a class from Jaynette Huff and she does 1/8 borders this way. If you ever get the chance to take one of her classes do it. Her quilts have won in Paducah and Houston. She is generous and will share all her award winning secrets.

Basically you cut large and trim down. Instead of cutting 3/4 inch black strips -1/4" plus 1/2" seam allowances - I cut 1 inch. Sewed it onto the blocks using the normal 1/4 seam allowance. Once sewed on, from the back of the block, trim off the extra 1/4" using your ruler rotary cutter.

Thanks for all the great comments! You gals are great for the ego. :-D

Got it. Thanks! Barb

Good! LOL

The quilt is beautiful. I've always loved the small black borders. Good tip to trim it later. Also liked the "peepers" hint. This board gives me a great education.

zkosh 01-24-2010 08:13 PM

Your quilt is beautiful and I loved the tip. I got a tip similar to this for creating skinny inserts, but I could never explain it. I hadn't thought about how much it would help with narrow borders to cut down to size after stitching one side. :-D

Thanks for a great tip.

That is a beautiful quilt good job. Don't know if I would be as brave.

nanamoe 01-25-2010 08:11 AM

gorgeous quilt

k3n 01-25-2010 09:11 AM

That is a beautiful quilt - I love those skinny borders, they give a stained glass effect.

I've been doing them with a 3/4" strip and sometimes get a bit 'close to the edge'. The last ones I did, I cut them at 7/8" then lined up the left toe of my foot (which is 3/8" wide) on the inside of the seam line. This seamed to work too. If necessary, I trimmed a bit off the seam allowance afterwards. :-D

Debbie1 01-25-2010 10:58 AM

It's goregous and you did an amazing job on it, but those borders would be hard to work with!

KarenBarnes 01-26-2010 07:25 AM

It may be tough to sew them but wow it really makes it pop! Beautiful quilt!

Bobbinwinder 01-26-2010 07:47 AM

Speechless...that quilt is jaw-dropping awesome! There's no element of the design that doesn't work for me...LOVE it! This is one of those stunning quilts that overwhelms you immediately when it's seen hung for show...then you find yourself standing in front of it in a trance...there's so much to see...so many little things that make it interesting... Geez, how many ways can I say that you've done a FANTASTIC job on this OUTSTANDING quilt. Thanks for sharing the photos and the tips...please show this quilt every chance you get...people need to see this one!

kankan01 01-26-2010 08:01 AM

Dkm 01-26-2010 08:23 AM

this is beautiful, but a lot of work. glad you saw it through.

Bobbinwinder 01-26-2010 08:36 AM

I've just re-read all the posts...still didn't see any mention of the pattern...I'd love to know if this is made from a published pattern and if so, would you mind sharing the name? This quilt is definitely a fabric lovers dream...you certainly did a great job in getting the most effective variety of prints and colors into this design. Thanks!

I didn't mention the pattern - but here is a link to the designers page. It is the pattern called Panel Quest. Personally, I was totally confused by the written directions...but maybe it was my inexperience too. Although she did say we were her first class for that particular pattern.

My main focus fabric was this peacock fabric from Hoffman.

I guess I had such a struggle with it that I forget how pretty it turned out! I have actually been using it every day lately. Thanks for all the comments.

carrieg 01-26-2010 04:52 PM

It's all coming back to me now! There were 2 different layouts and I used the layout that said 8 cuts of 1/3 yard. The directions refer to color #1to#6 - what about 7 & 8? And how do you cut a 13" square from 1/3 yard fabric cut? I constantly referred to the 2 color pics on the pattern.

It was totally frustrating! I was bound and determined to finish it because I had too much money invested for it to become a UFO!

Sheree from Chicago 01-26-2010 09:12 PM

Thanks for the tip!
