I have made a good many rag quilts. I have always used flannel for the middle layer. I was wondering what everyone else uses. And if u put batting in the middle does the batting bunch up after washing. Thanks for your answers. Have a beautiful March day

I use the polyester batting and with the X sewn in the middle the batting stays in place just fine

I normally use flannel in the middle, but have used warm & natural batting. When I use the batting, I cut an inch smaller, but do the X, so that keeps it from bunching. When I use flannel, I cut the same size.
I really think the X stops the bunching.
Good Luck!

I use Warn & Natural and do the same thing. I do the X because it is simple and quick. Any design would work.

I love the Fiskars rag snips!!! They make it so easy to cut the ragged edges. Much easier than the scissors i used to use.

i use batting, i (quilt) across each square so no, the batting does not bunch up. i use warm & natural and just catch it in the seams.

I have used poly batting, cotton batting, and flannel. I usually sew across the squares, but on 2 I embroidered the squares. I have never had the batting bunch up.

I also use the polyesta batting

I use batting because it gets really cold in the winter. I have to keep my heat low in order to be able to pay the bill. If you live somewhere warm you might not want batting at all.
